Sedona in late December? Is this a good choice?

We have a banked week that is about to expire, so we need to make reservations very soon. For a variety of reasons, our only time to travel in 2012 will be during Christmas break.

I placed a temporary hold on a unit in Sedona, AZ at Christmas time (Dec. 21-28), but I am not sure this is a good choice.

We are coming from Oregon and will combine this with a visit with relatives in Tucson after the week in Sedona.

What activities will be going on in town during the few days before and after Christmas?

What about day trips into the surrounding countryside? What will weather and road conditions be like at that time of year?

Would this exchange be worth is or should we keep looking for other options?

It will be cold (not a problem if you're from Oregon). Most of the touristy things will be shut down or sharply curtailed. It may be rainy or even a little snowy. They have a Red ROcks Light Festival about this time of year - frankly I have never understood why people get so excited about week 51/52 since I prefer to be home or with relatives. If you don't get down this way, I would spend a night or two in Sedona but NOT a week. Scottsdale would be a little more lively and, there are resorts in Tucson that could be an extension of your families' house and there are some interesting things to see near Tucson, too.

I have been there at that time and it is lovely. Brisk but so nice for hiking, restaurants not crowded, festival of lights in Tlaquepaque. A nice choice.

We love Sedona in late fall, winter, very early spring. We've always had very pleasant weather perfect for hiking! Less crowds, easy to get into restaurants. We called and made reservations ahead of time for some touristy things - no problem.
