I just read today that a second airport is planned about 23 miles south of Las Vegas. Read about it here. It all sounds really interesting, though it's about 10+ years away.

They have been "talking" about this for a couple of years now. I believe it would be out between Jean & Primm.

The issue is water. They want to take water from the Sandy Valley area and those folks don't want their residential/agriculture water supply being used up.

As I remember the proposal is to put in a freight/commercial airport to alleviate pressue at McCarran.

It will be interesting to see if it ever gets off the ground.

"They" say that it wouldn't open till 2017. Its not even in the blueprint stage yet, so that's not set in stone. "They" say it would be the airport for international and long haul carriers...can you imagine the $$$ of cab rides to the hotels on the Strip?

For the short term the airport is moving the rental cars all to one offsite center in the comng year...there will be one "rental center" shuttle instead of one for each brand. The lots that were onsite for Avis, Hertz and a few others will be turned into airport parking.

Parking is now $12./day in the garage and $6./day at the Russell Road economy lot. Short term pickup is 25cents an hour, or free if you just use the pickup lane.

That article I linked in my post above mentioned some sort of "intermodal" rapid transit for passengers and freight to get them to their destination. I wonder if they envision a train since the airport is supposed to be between the freeway and the train tracks.

With the development on the far south end of the LV Blvd., I wonder if someday there will be a Strip that extends all the way down to a new airport?
Seems far-fetched, but on the other hand, I'll bet the early developers of LV never imagined what it has become today.

They have been talking for years now of a high speed train running from LA to Vegas.

The issue that always seems to stand in the way of the train is the Desert Tortise

Environmentalists are concerned a train will ruin the Tortises' natural habitat.

Didn't even know there was a Desert Tortoise, but now that I do, hurray for the environmentalist.

Well, the first word in "analyst" is anal. The last word in "environmental" is mental.
