Yes, that is how it would work, if someone is giving up a reservation like this they coordinate releasing it with the person they're releasing it to. Unfortunately in this case it wasn't me.

OutSkiiing we spoke on the phone they looked for it and grabbed it. It did take about 30 seconds (seemed like an eternity) before it reappeared but it finally did.
