We drove there from the border crossing at Nogales, AZ. We actually drove down from Idaho. Volaris Airline serves Hermosillo. They interline with Southwest. It's probably further than you'd want to take a taxi to San Carlos, but perhaps a rental car?? The driving there is not difficult- It's VERY rural (read: desert).

This place, San Carlos/Guymas area definitely qualifies as 'off the beaten path'.

Fly into Guaymas

There is an airport in Guaymas. There are a couple of flights each day from Phoenix. One flight arrives about 2:30-3:00 - at least that was the schedule the time we did fly there. The resort is not close to town, so you do need a vehicle if you plan to leave the resort. They do have a small restaurant on site and the food was very good in June this year.

It is a small resort that Diamond bought a few years ago and made quite a few nice improvements.

We stop there on our way to Mazatlan each year as they also do nightly rentals. It is about 4 hours south of the border crossing in Nogales after you pay your tourist fees. IF you are going for a week and have Mexico Insurance on your vehicle, it is the Tourist Free zone and you do not have to get the car sticker. That saves a lot of time at the tourist registration. I think you may not need to stop at all for a week - at least that is how it is goign to Puerto Penasco.

It loolks like US Air/American does not fly there any more. When I check the Guaymas Tourist site, it says to fly into Hermosillo rent a car and drive to San Carlos.
