Question:
Let's say I buy a 1br lockout to get started in a timeshare thru resale. Then down the road I am outgrowing the unit and need the other 1br due to the size of my growing family.

If I buy a standard 1br unit in a couple years resale, how difficult is it to get side-by-side combinations for vacation? The idea is that I would technically have a 2br lockout, but I actually own 2 different units

they will not guarantee that you will get the 2 rooms together as a lock-out.so that will not work. the prices are so low now i would purchase the 2 br l/o. at this time you could use only one side and then out the other side with II to get another vacation during the year.then when the kids grow up then you will have both sides. ebay has auctions at very low prices now.

Nope - technically, you would own 2 one bdm units on separate deeds. I agree with Pointsjunkie - buy a 2 bdm. lock-off.

We’ve had great luck getting connecting units at SDO when we booked large and small one bedrooms at SDO via RCI extra-vacations. But, such connections are not guaranteed.

Another thing to consider is the fact that the annual maintenance fee for the small one bedroom (currently $482.76 apples-to-apples so subtracted the $5 ARDA fee) and large one bedroom (currently $568.97 apples-to-apples so subtracted the $5 ARDA fee) currently totals $224.13 in apples more than the 2 bedroom L/O (currently $827.60 apples-to-apples).

In other words, your annual maintenance fee would be 27% higher each year if you combined a small one bedroom and large one bedroom instead of just owning a 2 bedroom lock-off at SDO.

And then there’s the requal/retro issue. If you ever decide to requal/retro your resale SDO, the 2 bedroom lockoff will requal/retro for more StarOptions if you are only allowed to requal/retro one property per developer purchase.

SDO is wonderful. Sit back with a big ol' scoop of ice cream and enjoy!

Good Luck!
