Got home tonight and there was a very professional sounding message from our banks fraud department with a 1-800 # to call. Fortunately my husband (Mr Paranoid) took it and called the number. They asked for our credit card number and he said he didn't feel comfortable giving that so they said call the number on the back of your credit card. He did and the bank had never initiated the first call. The annoying part is they also don't seem inclined to follow it up even though he gave them the 1-800 #. I think I would have given them the number since I had just called the bank and would have been upset since it was the fraud department. They are getting clever!

Maybe I'm missing something here, but if this was a scam, why would the scammers tell you to call the number on the back of your credit card?

Because many folks, unlike the op's husband, would have made the assumption that you do, ie....if they are telling me to call the number on my card, these folks must be legit, and give up their info to the bad guys

In case that was enough for you to be comfortable?

I once received one of those calls, and knew immediately it was a fraud.
They said it was for a bank with which I had never done any business.

OTOH, I did also get a fraud call from Chase.
They did not ask for personal information... They already had it.

First they asked for the number only when he refused to give it to them did they tell him to call the number on the back of the card. Likely a lot of people would have immediately just said the number withour thinking because they would assume they called their bank.
