Hello, consider myself lucky. I recently exchanged a 1 and 2 bedroom Las Vegas timeshare for a 2 and 3 bedroom at Sands of Kahana for Early Dec 2012

I'm sure I'll get great advise as I have in the past

My questions are:

1) 3 bedroom is for my family and 2 bedroom for my in-laws, Is there a chance we can get rooms close to each other and what are chances of trying to get some type of ocean view as an exchanger. Can I request ocean view??

2) When are good times to look for flights, my family departing San Diego, In laws Chicago

3) Any must do's and suggestions would be greatly appreciated

4) can I get away with not purchasing a guest certificate for my in laws. Both exchanges are in my name and check in is the exact same day so I'm assuming guest certificate is not needed

Thanks, Andy

Hi Andy, I'm an SOK owner (3 br) and also live in San Diego. :hi:
1. I would suggest asking for an ocean view room. The resort itself is considered an ocean front resort - - you're close. About 1/4 of the rooms are "no view", 1/4 ocean front and 1/2 ocean view. I am told that the owners have preference over exchangers, but I know that exchangers regularly get an ocean view or better. Check in is at 4 so if you get there early, you may have a better shot at an ocean view. If you arrive at 10 pm, you will get whatever is still left.
2. Flights? If you're flying with Frequent flyer miles, you can book 336 days in advance. Otherwise, sign up for someone like Tripadvisor or Kayak. It seems like the lower fares pop up around 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 months out. From San Diego, I recall that Alaska has a non-stop but it is an early flight (like 7:15 am).
3. Must do? Whale watch, drive to Hana, Eat at Hana Ranch, snorkle at black rock (Sheraton), Mama's fish house, snorkle at Molakini, sunset cruise, Napilii Fish house, Kobe's Lahaina, Mendez horseback riding.
They have a restaurant on site and they used to have a $3.99 breakfast special and an early-bird dinner special. Both are good bargains. Pick up your snorkel gear at Boss Frog's (walking distance from SOK). If you have time, pick up your liquor/groceries at Costco by the airport. Otherwise go to Safeway in Lahaina and get a Safeway card on site (if you don't already have one) for some good discounts.
4. Guest certificate? You'll probably get away with it if both res's are in your name and you check in for both rooms. :cheer:

Thanks so much for the info, I stayed at kahana beach resort approx 4 years ago and had a great time, I actually purchased an EOY studio for ONLY 8k. Once I woke up from my hangover I was lucky enough to rescind the next day thanks to the help of another person I met that was staying at KBC.

Thanks for flight info and I didn't know it was best to show up earlier to try and get ocean views, I just assumed they were assigned prior to check in. I'll try and schedule a flight to get in earlier. Are you allowed to check in earlier than 4 pm?

In regards to all recommendations, I only did one that you mentioned. I had so much fun doing NOTHING the first time I went I really plan on exploring more this time.

Thanks again

Andy, I notice that the Kahana Beach units consist of both efficiencies and 1 BR units. Do both the efficiencies and the 1 BR units share the same view? Looking on google maps, it is unclear if all of them are facing the ocean or whether the building is split so that half look seaward and have towards the mountains. I'm asking because I may want to add on a few days at the KB to next year's two weeks at the Sands.

BTW, I bought my SOK on eBay for a couple of cents on the dollar. But, even if free, there is still the MF. :bawl: But I think that I'm getting good value. I'm paying about the same per night (all things included) as I would for a nice hotel and I'm getting tons of room and comfort.

BJR, I believe all the efficiencies are ocean front....at least mine was. The one bedroom I saw was on the very far corner with view of ocean and sands of kahana and if I remember I was told all 1 bedrooms were in that area

BJR, I forgot to mention I don't think there are rooms facing mountains. When I stayed in our studio when you'd walk out your front door there weren't rooms across from me, I think all rooms face ocean but don't quote me on that, I'm sure there are others who can confirm this
