For those of you who have been to the Royals recently, is there much difference between the Sands and the Mayan? Based on ocean swimming and beach, which would be better? We're not really "pool people" when in Mexico or the Caribbean. We have our choice of resorts. Will any beach refurbishment be done by then? Thanks.

They are both great resorts. From the pictures on the Royals webpage it looks like the Mayan has the better beach right now. However, I have read is several places that the beach restoration project is supposed to be done by end of April, meaning that the beach at the Sands should be great by then. All of the villas at the Sands have ocean view, but some of the Mayan have lagoon view. The Mayan is a part of the tri-Royals, which is a bonus, but the Sands has easier access to the street and is next to the Kulkulkan mall. I guess it just depends on what you prefer. We will be at the Sands at that time too! (4/29 to May 6).

Based on beach alone I would take the Royal Islander,Carribean or Mayan over the Sands.
Things Tend to move slowly in Mexico in general.
The Restoration project is getting off to a slow start and will most likely run into some issues along the way that could extend the amount of time befor it is completed.
The Beach at the Tri-Royals is halfway decent right now and the restoration Project is suppose to start at that end of the beach so it has the greatest chanch of being in Prime condition during your planned visit.
The Sands is still suffering from a disapearing beach that comes and goes depending on tidal activity and could prove to be a challange to rebuild.

I love to walk the beach. Is this possible in front of the Tri-Royals? Thanks.

The Tri-Royal Beach is excellent for walking.
The Sands beach may or may not depending on the current tidal situation.

Just got back from Royal Sands. Visited the Tri-Royals when I was there and access to both was very poor to the point that no one was in the water. You can walk further on the Tri-royal beach.

We also just returned from the Islander and the beach was wide and sandy. However, the rocks right as you enter the water were very large so swimming is difficult unless you are in a very few areas that don't have rocks.

We also visited the Sands. The Sands beach is much more devastated.

I own at both. The Sands has a great location and the only Spa of all the Royals. The Mayan is warmer and its formal and informal restaurants the best in the Royals. It is an extra 5 minutes or less on the bus from everywhere. It has the better beach. And unlike the Sands, the master bath has dual sinks.

I prefer the Mayan. As for the spa, the Royals run a shuttle between it and the Sands or you can walk.
