Back recently from three awesome weeks in Playa del carmen area and looking to go again Christmas/New Years 2012/13.

A couple quick ?s please:

1. I do not own timeshare (always book rci extra vacations through a friend) and wondering if anyone can suggest moderately priced booking options for two weeks at this resort in a one bedroom suite.

2. Also wondering what the snorkelling is like on-site?

Any info. would be really appreciated.

Thank you

You can find rentals advertised on a lot of sites, including the TUG marketplace, redweek.com, omcancun.com, myresortnetwork.com, and royalweek.com.

You can also rent directly from the developer at royalresorts.com, for a higher cost most likely.

It is unlikely that you would be able to get the same location for two weeks in a row, because each specific villa/week is under the control of its owner. This would happen only if a given owner is trying to rent back-to-back weeks, or unless the developer still happens to own back-to-back weeks in the same villa.

However don't let that dissuade you; the resort staff will move your things for you on Saturday.

As far as the snorkeling.....You can snorkel in shallow water right at the edge of the beach and for maybe 30-50' out. It's ok, but not at all spectacular. I find it quite uncomfortable to snorkel in such shallow water because I can't dangle my feet or stop to tread water for awhile, for fear of touching the coral.

While there is reef snorkeling to the side and further out, I have heard that it could be cloudy due to the boats in the area.....haven't tried it myself.

Akumal, which is south (Thanks Mike!) of the RH and easily reached via rental car or private van, is a better snorkeling site.

A little bit disoriented there tonight PJ? :) Happens to me all the time.

Akumal is to the south of the RH, south of Playa, but great advice other than the directional matter. ;) Now to the north, you do have Puerto Morelos, one of our favorite snorkel locations. Easy to book tours from RH that include ceynotes, or just the reef snorkeling.

Riu Girl, with two weeks at RH, for variety sake, you could also consider a day trip to Cozumel for a change of pace. You can take a boat from an operator or simply snorkel from the shoreline at the Money Bar or other spots along the west coast of the island.

Whoopsie! I was picturing it South of the Tris, and missed that it's even a tad further down than the RH.

Maybe I got disoriented by the lights Easy saw dancing in the sky ;)

Yeah, that tequila does some strange things... Or is it the ancient Mayans trying to tell us something?
