Since there are no II trades into Rome we are looking at cash and points with spg. There are several options the more costly being in the center of city, this seems to make sense so we can be closer to everything rather than worry about transport to get somewhere. Any feedback much appreciated.

The St Regis is a stone's throw from Termini station. I didn't really like the "feel" of the area at times -- too busy for my tastes.

The Westin Excelsior is a bit further, but a 2-min walk from the subway and you're at Termini in a couple of minutes -- did that tons of times. A very wide selection of restaurants surrounding you. We chose to stay there when we were last in Rome -- got a really nice suite because we're SPG Platinum and had informed them weeks prior to arrival that it was our anniversary.

Both cost the same in terms of SPG points -- 20K per night, 5th night free, for a standard room.

Westin Excelsior

The Westin Excelsior is near Villa Borghese and subway stops are nearby. When we were there, we walked to Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain easily. The Church of Santa Susanna is not too far and you can get tickets to Papal Audiences there. The audiences are usually every Wednesday.
We used SPG point for 12,000 per night with the fifth night free.

I agree 100% with the comments on the Westin Excelcior in Rome. We stayed there 4 nights in May and it was one of the nicest hotels we had ever stayed in. They upgraded us to a larger room on the SPG floor with a huge terrace overlooking the rooftops of Rome. I could have stayed a month in that room. They have a 6-piece bathroom: double sink, huge shower, separate tub, toilet, and bidet. Service was very friendly without being cloying. The restaurant was very good.

The hotel is only a block from the Borghese Gardens and a short walk to the Barberini Metro station and the Trevi Fountain. We never took taxis anywhere; just walked or took buses. Buses are everywhere and very convenient, with a major bus stop across the street from the Westin.

Our only problem was when checking out. For some unknown reason they rejected our credit card for payment. Fortunately, we had a second one with us or it would have been a huge problem. Since we had to catch a train, we were in a hurry so did not do anything about it at the time, but did check with the original credit card company later. They said they had no record of a request for a charge that day from that hotel. My guess is that Westin's bank bank rejected it, not ours.

This is a very lovely palace hotel, across from the American Embassy. I would definitely stay there again. As a matter of fact, I would not hesitate to stay in a Westin anywhere in Europe. I think the Westin hotels in Europe are much nicer than the Westins in the U.S.

We stayed there last May. The location is pretty good, hotel is very nice. We also walked to Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and the Villa Borghese. You will need a taxi or bus to reach the Coliseum and Vatican.

Here's what I wrote on another forum about the Westin Excelsior. But it was almost five years ago. Can't believe it was that long ago. We loved it, and loved Rome.

"We stayed at this hotel for three nights using Starwood points. We would have never stayed there if not for the points. The room was beautiful, and the window opened onto the Via Vittorio Veneto. Great view of the area. We received a complimentary bottle of wine as part of the Starwood package.

The staff was friendly and spoke English well. The concierge was helpful in arranging a taxi for a very early trip to the airport. Housekeeping staff is very good, and the room was spotless.

The hotel has a very nice bar with evening entertainment. Like the hotel, it's not cheap. A martini was 15 euro, but the drink was a good size and well made.

There are many nice restaurants in the area, and if you get off the main street, they are reasonably priced.

The hotel is equidistant between two Metro stops, both just a short walk. This made access to the rest of Rome very easy."

Five years ago we stayed on Cash & Points at the St. Regis and were very impressed. Not too much within a couple of blocks for dinner, but it is a convenient location and a very high end hotel. Watching people coming back from shopping is like a scene from "Pretty Women".

We stayed at the Excelsior in June, in a Jr Suite (which was really a small 1-bedroom) and a huge suite. Great hotel, not so great staff, but overall a wonderful place in a large city. Change of topic, but... It was my first time in Rome and I have absolutely no reason to return. I'll go back to Florence, Lake Como, Venice and other places in Italy without hesitation, but plan on avoiding Rome in future.

alohakevin,

Is there a Cash & Points option available at either of these hotels? I just looked at the spg website. I was curious of the point rate since two different point values were quoted. I checked a few dates, but none of the dates I looked at had the C&P option available. The point rate ranged from 20 - 25 K per night depending on the season. The lesser point hotels seem to be outside the tourist area. Just curious, as I am thinking of going in 2013 for my 20th anniversary.

The hotel Eden is close from what I can gather and has a c@p of 150.00 plus 8000 points but is limited on what weeks you can use that. There are two others that use c@p the Roma and the golfparko de medici but they both are several miles from city center
