The Radiators are a long-time New Orleans band that never got much recognition.

Sammy Hagar vocals, Ronnie Montrose guitar. Too many egos in this group (Montrose and Hagar) to sustain the success they started with. Ronnie was upset that money would no longer be backed by precious metals and wrote this song. I think it's a great song. I also like Rock Candy, and Bad Motor Scooter on Ronnie's guitar by Ronnie only. It was never imitated well enough to meet with his talent. Alcoholism did Ronnie in. Sammy has been gracious with the family but he wasn't all that gracious for many years after the separation.

I think John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers are in this category. They never really had a hit but their music is superb. Many of the greats started as a Bluebreaker. My favorite John Mayall record is the Turning Point.

Manraygun. Tough enough for Canadian bands to get due recognition, but when a band is based in Edmonton it's hard to get respect even in Canada.

My choice for most underappreciated rock band would be "The Band".
I'd think having a documentary produced by Martin Scorsese of a concert promoted by Bill Graham would disqualify them as being underappreciated.
Not to mention being ranked #50 in the Rolling Stone magazine's "100 Greatest Artists of All Time", higher than Eric Clapton, Queen, Pink Floyd, The Temptations, Eagles, Creedence Clearwater, Diana Ross and the Supremes. Doesn't seem underappreciated to me,

Not all necessarily obscure in my heyday but not exactly household names or regulars on the radio either. A sample out of my collection.

Some are still active, all are worthy in their own sub-genres, if you want to call it that:

- Little Feat
- Lamont Cranston Band
- Brian Setzer Orchestra
- Delbert McClinton
- Dillard and Clark
- Holy Modal Rounders
- David Bromberg Band
- Leon Russell
- Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks
- Charles Ford Band
-The Heartfixers
- Imelda May
- Indigenous

And Mutt Lang became even more famous when he married Shania Twain. And ultimately became even more famous for having an affair with Twain’s assistant/best friend. Subsequently, Twain married the ex-husband of her ex-assistant/best friend. Just a little side info.

I'm really enjoying the threads discussing great music theme songs and best decades. There is a lot of great music out there from various genres that have enhanced all of our lives. I'd like to start a thread about more obscure bands that never got the publicity that their talent deserved. These are two of my favorites.

Todd Rundgren was the guitar player for Nazz. They recorded the original 'Hello It's Me" which was a slower version with great harmonies. Todd wasn't the lead singer for most of their songs. One of my favorites is Under the Ice from their second album (actually red vinyl). This has some of the best drumming that I've ever heard.

One of my favorite bands that never made it 'big' was City Boy. They had several good albums that featured the guitar playing of Mike Slamer. They were actually produced by Mutt Lang, who later became more famous by producing Def Leapard's Pyromania and several other successful albums. This song is from 'Day the Earth Caught Fire' album. That album would have been a great soundtrack.

not unlike one of the most unusual baseball trades of all time, when Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson of the NY Yankees swapped wives (and famililies).

I will throw The Black Crowes into this mix. Their biggest album was their debut, 1989’s Shake Your Money Maker but the next few were great. 1992’s Southern Musical and Harmony Companion was an awesome blues/Southern rock album. Infighting between the brothers tore the band apart (had a tour with Oasis and their brothers were shocked and the Brothers Robinson fights).

Mentioned earlier, a lot of Canadian bands don't get a lot of love. But, living on the border we tend to hear about more of them. One that I liked in the 70s called Saga, which I think was out of Toronto.

Seattle Tacoma had some great bands in the early 60's. My late HS early college days. My favorite. The Sonics. The Wailers. The Wailers with Rockin' Robin Roberts recorded this before The Kingsman (from Portland) recorded it and with whom the song is generally credited. Every band in the PNW had to play "Louie Louie" These bands were so much better than the crap being pushed nationally. Trust me the Beatles and the Stones knew who they were.

I agree. They were another of my favorites and produced at least a few good albums. Very tight.

When I was growing up in the Chicago area, I got to see bands before they made it big:
  • REO Speedwagon

I went to school at UofI Champaign/Urbana. REO Speedwagon played at the small bars and pizza joints in Chambana while I was there, before they hit it big. Local boys made good.
