Has anyone heard of, or had experience with, this program?

www.roadscholar.org

It looks so very very interesting. We are planning a big trip for next year and are having a terrible time figuring out what to do. They have a couple of trips we think we would like but would like to hear stories from people who have actually gone.

Thanks for any information!

It used to be known as 'Elderhostel'. We've taken 5 or 6 of them, ranging from snowmobiling and geology of Yellowstone, Spanish lessons in Nogales and more. I am considering a watercolor course at Yosemite for this Spring. They are not 'top shelf' luxury vacations,- Lodging is frequently a budget, chain motel and a ham sandwich and veggie tray might show up at lunchtime, but you DO meet the most interesting cross section of people. Many are retired educators who have taken 25-30 or more of these programs.

Even though they are not luxury trips, they aren't inexpensive- largely because they are unique and aimed at small groups. They are also designed to provide income for the institutions who put on the programs. That will naturally result in a certain amount of inequality in the programs. That said, I always have thought we got good value and took something away that we couldn't have gotten otherwise.

Thanks for the reply Jim!
Are we too young for the program? We are not retired and are 47 and 50. Just wanting to celebrate a 25th wedding anniversary in a big way!
We are considering one of the Asia or Peru trips.

You'd probably be on the lower side of the age-scale, but I doubt you will feel slowed down by them. These are a bunch of people who live life to the fullest. You are not so much younger that there would be a communication gap :) Expect a majority of solo women. At least that's been our experience. The ol' guy wants to stay home and the wife sez, "I'm going without you!"

Sounds like a fun trip- but some difference between the two.

You might also consider Overseas Adventure Travel. They are also small group, 'light adventure', or cultural immersion trips. More complete than Road Scholar, and wonderful on every level. We've done Thailand and Morocco with them. Highly recommended. www.oattravel.com

Thank you Jim. I appreciate your input. Will definitely research www.oattravel.com. It helps to hear from people who have actually used the company!
