Rina looks like it wants to wipe out the brand new beach in Cancun. Anyone there (or getting out of there) or not going as a result? MSC sounds like SVO will be rescheduling people planning on going.

Hope my Ocean Side unit doesn't end up Ocean Edge.

We were in a category 2 hurricane in Cancun about 2 years ago named Ida. Our plane landed at 5pm and did not clear customs and immigration until almost 9pm. So happens that many employees didn't come to work because of the incoming hurricane and so the lines were LONG. We checked into our room around 9:30pm. By midnight, the hurricane was in full force. We were in an ocean side room and the sea was definitely stirred up and eroded some of the beach. By the time the hurricane was over, many pool tiles were off the plaster, trees were down, and mud and sand were everywhere. Within 2 days you could hardly tell we had a hurricane. WLR is very well built and we felt completely safe the whole time.

This is evidence that my kids get a great education traveling. We have had 2 tsunami warnings and 2 hurricanes in the past 2 years or so of traveling.

We are scheduled to go Nov 10. Good to hear that they clear it up so quickly.

Keep an eye on the forecast. Rina is looping around and there is another big mess just below Cuba that may head that way.

We are at WSJ November 5-12 (soon). I usually do not start checking forecasts until about 4 days prior to our arrival. I hope that we do not have any problems this year. Last year a huge storm caused major damage at WSJ a few days after we left. It caused damage to the tennis courts and pool if I remember correctly. Hopefully we will have a great trip again this year with weather to match. I have had my share of tsunami warnings and hurricanes for a while.

NOAA is tracking the remnants of Rina and another huge mass of tropical moisture in the western Carribean. There is a system in the Atlantic, but so far doesn't look like there is anything worth worrying about in the Virgin Islands. Check this site if you are curious:

For what it's worth, when you travel to this area during hurricane season, you should be checking more than 4 days out.

From My Star Central - Update

Weather Advisory - Friday, October 28, 2011

We are pleased to say The Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort sustained little to no damage from Tropical Storm Rina.

While the team at The Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort are working on minor landscaping and other cleanup activities, the resort is operating as usual. We look forward to welcoming all our Owners and Guests to Cancun.

Thank you for the link to the site. I only start checking about 4 days prior as that is usually the soonest that ALL tracks match up. I have seen way too many hurricanes barreling toward a location only to make a huge and unexpected turn 4-5 days out. If a huge storm is coming, we can then make an informed decision to go somewhere else or brave the "cane".

I rarely travel to the Carriibean (Cancun, Bahamas, VIs, etc.) from July-October specifically to try to avoid storms; we use these months to get to other places like Hawaii. Technically June and November are considered hurricane season in many places but there seem to be less hurricanes during those months.
