I'm considering buying my first timeshare and like the idea of right to use. I found one expiring in 2021 and like the idea of not being stuck with management fess forever if I have trouble selling it in the future. Does anyone have any experience in RTU? I'm concerned that the property may not be kept up, fees increasing as the expiration date nears. What happens in 2021? Do they try and sell me a mew RTU? Any help would be appreciated.

My first timeshare was a RTU in the Poconos, purchased in 1981. My original term was 13 years with an option to add 7 years to max it out at 20 for an additional 10% (which I did do).

With four years left in the term, there was a 3 year assessment to get the place renovated. At the 20th year of use, there was no contact from the management company or resort . . . no offer to (re)buy or anything. Not even a letter thanking me for my "ownership".

It left a bad taste in my mouth, but I was glad to be able to move on and buy resale (which I started shopping around for my last two years of use of the RTU resort).

Was this Wyndham or Fairfieldd before them?

Nope - it was Split Rock.

I think it varies quite a bit by what you are buying. Some have different options at the end of the term. You will need to read the documents to find out what happens at the end. If you have a resort in mind post it here.
