I friend of mine's doctor told him if you want to live a long time don't fall. What causes people to fall? Too much Alcohol. Non Alcoholic beer and wine are getting much better these days I enjoy them.
When you are older, it isn’t necessary alcohol. I know lots of people who fall a lot, have poor balance, won’t use a cane or walker. Also, women who have a dog they can’t handle, dog sees a rabbit, another dog, a bike, takes off and pul them down.

For me it’s cats under foot. Cliff refuses to turn a darn light on when going into the living room or kitchen at night, in addition to now shuffling as he walks.

Shuffling while walking is one of the greatest hazards. My MIL has had serious face-plant type falls from shuffling and stumbling.

Yep. And I think also strangely limp and dangling arms and hands. At his last October cognitive test, after I’d had mine and they called me in to talk with them about Cliff in front of Cliff, the director of Health Services said to him “I could tell as you walked in that you were having issues”. Three years ago we went back to a funeral and his sister said the same thing adding “you are walking like Daddy”. Their father had dementia. I walked behind a couple I didn’t know the other day and immediately noticed the arm dangle/weird hands from the man.

I remember seeing some people walking into a function and immediately thought, oh boy he has dementia
 
Shuffling - Parkinsons... I knew/supsected my father-in-law had it before he was diagnosed :(.

She's going strong at age 92, and it's been 10 years since her last face plant. No signs of dementia at all; she's still sharp as a tack. :)
 
Sorry, but pineapple juice, grenadine and blood orange liquer? That is just over the top sweet. I will never order a drink that has pineapple juice - it is too sweet.

And BTW, Sir Ralph Edward, my NA Mockapolitan is mostly cranberry juice and lime juice, so sour, not sweet. Susan

One of our friends tripped over their dog and ended up with metal plates in her leg somewhere around 45. In her 50's she was going to work and slipped on ice and has metal parts in her arm. She had to go back for the leg plates because a fastener was popping up near her skin.

18 grams (4.5 teaspoons) seems like a lot of sugar in one drink

As we get older, our bodies get more insulin resistant and become pre-diabetic and diabetic. 18g of sugar in a drink is usually not a problem for a teenager. For most of us old people, it is simply too much.

You do realize that it has 18g sugar, right? This is way too high for most adults.
My A1c at 74 has been 5.6 for a couple of years, not even pre-diabetic -- and I don't eat much other sugar. My choice, thank you.

I'm having trouble with my math. One teaspoon of sugar equals 4+ grams? Is that right? Now I'm going to start reading labels more.

Yes. We don't even have sugar at home. Once in a blue moon, when I want to bake something, I use Stevia. Also, carbs turn into sugar in our bodies, so we eat carbs sparingly as well. So far so good for me but we have to be careful as we age.

I find my A1ac inching up every year . It was 5.6 at age 74 but 8 years later us 6.2

It’s as much about lifestyle as age IME, though I’m only turning 55 this year. Been on a serious health journey the past six months, A1C is down from a high of 7.3 a little over a year ago to 5.6 in late February (probably even lower now). Cholesterol from 222 to 137. All other scores normalized as well, due to a 55 (now 65) lb weight loss and eating healthy - low fat low carb high protein program. No meds at all (no GLP1s in other words). Still on a low dose of metformin but at my next PCP appt will likely stop that altogether. Next up is to see if I can lower or eliminate the high BP meds.

BTW 18 grams of sugar is not a lot in my opinion. Even an 8 oz glass of orange juice has 21 grams.
Everyone needs *some* carbs for proper nutrition, even diabetics. When I was working in a major (medical student) teaching hospital 15 years ago, food services would send up an evening snack for all diabetic patients every day consisting of half a sandwich and a piece of fruit so they wouldn't "bottom out" during the night from low blood sugar. It needed to have about 15 grams of carbs, which is one serving.

Statistically, you are running a bit low on the cholesterol. Below 140 causes the cancer risk to start elevating.
