Resort lost my reservation, blames RCI

I arrived at Tahoe Beach and Ski last night, and they could not find my confirmation in their system and denied me check in. They claim RCI did not sent it to them (confirmed 17 months ago and I showed them proof). Last week, I had called the resort and placed a building request so how could that be? Either the front desk person I spoke to was bs-ing me on recording my building request, or my confirmation got deleted sometime after that.
Anyway, Lake Tahoe on a summer Saturday night... RCI emergency line could not find a replacement property.
This morning RCI is trying again, but do I have to accept whatever they find if anything? Can I demand a refund of trading power and exchange fee even if Tahoe Beach and Ski "finds" my reservation today? I didn't really like how the front desk handled it and would prefer not to go back there.

You are certainly entitled to firmly ask for that in my view.

The resort and exchange company failed to deliver what your trading power and hefty fees were bargained for.

The general understanding on TUG is if an exchanger does not show up for the first night of an exchange and has not made advance arrangements with the resort they can loose the remainder of the stay.

IMHO the flip side of that coin is if they do not let you check in on the first night, they failed to deliver what they should and have a responsibility (at least ethically) to make you whole.

Where did you stay last night? Let us know how this is settled

Hotels in SLT were full up. My husband has a colleague with a cabin in Tahoe Vista that was unoccupied so I drove around and stayed there for the night. Going to book something in kings Beach or Tahoe Vista for the next couple of nights, then go home. They did restore my TP and refund my exchange fee.

They should have done more. What happened to you is unacceptable. You have a right to find out exactly what happened. Did RCI cancel it, did the resort rent it, etc. Go higher up in RCI. Ask for a free week, trade fee waved, etc.

And extended the expiration date of those TPUs?

This is awful. I agree with Panina, they need to do more. Like cover your out of pocket costs! It is unfair that everyone except them is paying. You, your friends who graciously let you stay in their cabin etc. This is on them and they absolutely need to let you know where the breakdown occurred.

We count on our vacations being confirmed and that when we show up, we have a week. RCI should absolutely do a lot more for you. This is unacceptable.

The RCI person today said the resort had deposited 3 weeks with them with that check in date and reneged on all 3. I have seen this resort on II as well. Maybe they preferentially favor II exchangers.
I did ask for an extension for my TPUs and they did a complimentary one year combine with another soon to expire deposit so the TPUs will be valid until June 2025. They offered up to $150 if I provided a hotel receipt for last night, but that would not have come close to the cost of any room had there been one.

Thought about giving you a thumbs up for this post. But RCI and the resort don’t deserve any more than half a thumb up for that.

But, on the other hand, they only charge a bargain basement exchange fee of $299. We can’t expect much more than a computerized execution of an exchange for that can we? [sarcasm intended]

When did RCI know the unit wasn't available? When did it happen to the first person? Why didn't RCI contact you? Go higher. Ask to speak to a supervisor. Write a letter/email to corporate. Ask for more. Your time and aggravation is worth more than they gave you.

Panina, You are right, but I have decided to move on and not pursue it further. It will only aggravate me and that's not what vacation is about. I am lucky to have had somewhere to go the first night, enough money to cover the lodging we are in currently, and an adaptable companion (my daughter).

I hear ya! Enjoy the rest of your week.
