Resale Diamond point purchase vs actual unit

We currently own at Kaanapali Beach Club, 2 Bdr @1 week every year, (15,500 points) and 1 bedroom @ 1 week every other year, (3,500 points). 3,000 more points are in the CA Collection so we could join "the Club" .... so, a total of 22,000 points a year. Silver Elite status.....

When we visited KBC last week, there was a very hard sell to purchase additional weeks or points. :cheer: After we turned the sales department down at least 6 times, we met with an individual from DRI "corporate". He said it was his job to be sure we weren't treated badly by the sales people and he also explained a couple points that were very unclear in the sales pitch. He offered us 18 months to consider our purchase of what was presented if we purchased 7,500 points (one time use)..... You will all be disappointed to hear that we did purchase those points so we could "lock in" the offer to purchase 8,000 points to get to the "Gold Elite" status.....

Now, from reading a number of posts/threads on TUG, I know to only purchase through resale.

What I am not sure of is whether we should purchase through resale, an additional every-other week 1 bedroom so we have access every year, and not worry about obtaining gold status.....

Or should we purchase additional points through resale to get us to Gold Status?

I guess the basic question is..... is it better to obtain points through an actual unit, or by purchasing them? If I purchase a 1 bedroom every other year, do points automatically come with the acquisition if I am already a member of the club?

Is obtaining Gold status vs Silver status really all that beneficial?

We just retired and really only interested in Hawaii at this point so not too interested in exchanging, but that could change in the future.

Thanks in advance for any advice from those in the know.....

As a general rule you will pay far more to buy retail (& become "gold" in this case) than you will ever get back as benefits vs resale pricing. No exception here.

Thanks, not thinking of retail, only considering resale purchase, but not sure whether to purchase points or a 1 bedroom every other year.

Trying to buy Diamond Points resale is a real chore. They do all they can to not make it clear at all what you are getting & usually don't raise your membership level if you dare to buy resale.

The EOY may turn out to be the better deal still.

Forget gold unless

You need to really consider how much you will use your points. I know being retired you may believe you will travel more. That may be true, but as people get older they tend to not travel as much. Thus, not being able to travel and still having those maintenance fees is something to consider.

Having gold status is not why you buy the extra points. It's only if you are going to need accommodations that gold will provide you is why you buy the additional points. I would suggest that you strongly think about your future needs prior to purchasing additional points. The benefits from silver to gold are minimal.

You will have to purchase through DRI to get Club points. Buying a resale would be cheaper, but heck I believe you would be better off just renting when you want to stay so you will not have permanent fees.

Pamanc,
I don't know the DRI system but in general you can't obtain or increase your status through resale purchases (unless DRI lets you retro your resale through a subsequent retail purchase). In fact your resale purchase wouldn't be part of your "Club" account and could only be used in the collection purchased-if points or at the resort purchased if deeded week.
