I am leaving on Saturday for a week at Marriott's Frenchman's Cove, Jan 17-24th. I need a rental car. Which rental company do you use in St Thomas? All the rates are extremely high but so far Hertz seems the cheapest-- which amazes me. I want a larger car since there will be four adults and luggage.

Any ideas or suggestions about a car or anything else having to do with STT? Thanks

I was there in Nov and car rental is extremely expensive. For a compact car, I paid over $300 a week via Avis. I didn't find any cheap rental, national chains or locals...If someone knows a cheap outlet, please let us know. Hopefully we'll be back there again later part of this year.

Rental cars I checked out were $40/day, economy. Taxi's are also expensive, they charge per person. You would probably save $ renting a car in STT even if you only went one place a day.

Hertz is ok if you're not going to St John

Some of the St Thomas car rental companies do not allow you to take the car on the car barge over to St John. Just be aware if this is something you'd planned on doing.

Rental cars in the Virgin Islands are very expensive and most companies are within $10/day of each other. We typically pay about $500/week for a Jeep Liberty on St John. If you've never been to the islands, note that the roads are steep and narrow, and you drive on the left. St Thomas also has some terrific traffic jams.

I checked with the other companies and they only had small cars for rent. Hertz had minivans which suit our party better. I called Hertz to ask them something and was reminded not to take the car on the ferry or face $1000 in fines or imprisonment. No kidding she said that!!

In the past we just took the passenger ferry over and then looked around for a day jeep rental on STJ. Worked out well, they just told us where to leave the keys after hours. They don't reserve a one day ahead of time.

Last time we took our Avis rental over on the car ferry with no problems, other than rough seas and there was water pouring down and had to wind the windows up on the car.

We did this, too, and had a terrific time exploring the island. It was a jeep convertible (i.e., open top). Been too long to remember how much it cost for that one day.
