Good day! I've just bought my first timeshare, a week at [a resort in Hawaii]. It had the 2015 usage available, but we can't go this year, so I'm trying to rent it out. Given the timing of the closing, I got one of the last available weeks for 2015 December is an OK month, however it has a Wednesday check-in.

I've had ads up on VRBO, redweek and TUG for a month. I've had 2 serious inquiries, but it hasn't rented yet. I have the week priced at $1200 on redweek. I may lower that within a couple weeks.

My question: is this a typical experience? Given a week with a weird check-in, is it typical for it to take several weeks before it rents? I'm including my listings below; I've tried to make a good write-up and include lots of pictures to show it as a good unit.

Many thanks for any help or feedback!
Ken

Why not also post an ad on Craig's List and eBay Classifieds?

They are both free to use and will give you more exposure.

I don't know what others are getting for rent at that time but with a Wed check in and the fact that you got the time as a bonus I would make sure my rate was well below the other rentals.

Aruba rental

My wife and I own seven timeshares in Aruba in the Feb/Mar timeframe and rent most of them out every year. This year I didn't even have to advertise and two different people rented them in May (for Feb 2016). I have the others on Redweek and Tug2. Given that one needs to fly to Aruba, my experience has been that they rent months before. That being said, when there are folks that have confirmations at hotels in Aruba that will continue to look on Redweek and Tug2 to get a deal and cancel the hotel. Also, there are resellers that will market the timeshares on Redweek and Tug2, mark them up and resell.

Why do you think 2015 usage was a bonus? OP may have had to reimburse the seller for the 2015 maintenance fees. And if not, it was still included in the purchase price.

Unfortunately, early Dec. actually has the lowest demand of the year in Hawaii. So the problem is that there aren't a lot of people looking for this date.

In early December, people are focusing on the holidays, and spending their money on the holidays.

Have you taken a hard look at what the competition is asking? To get yours rented, you want to be the lowest price for the date. I also recommend advertising it on Craigslist.

High season in Hawaii is Feb./March and mid-June to mid-[August]

Thanks very much for everyone's feedback!

I actually had it on craigslist as well, sorry not to mention. I'll repost it there. I'm also thinking to put it on ebay with a reserve price of $1,000, maybe $800.

The 2015 usage was actually a selling point for this week. I got it at a bargain price of $200, and with transfer fees etc the total cost was about $1000. I figured that, with the 2015 usage included, I could make back the purchase price/costs by renting this year's week.

I had seen other weeks around then renting $1400-1600, so priced mine at $1200. Probably I'll have to go lower, esp with the Wed check-in.

Thanks very much for the note that Feb-Mar and June/July being the high season. I had been thinking of Jan-Feb as the high season, since people would go there to escape the winter. Would it be fair to say that in June-July you have a good chance for someone to rent your week, but the $$ you'll get won't be quite as high as Jan-Mar?

No - really the only weeks that might command higher rates are Christmas and New Years.
