Rental car when going to several sights?

We will be in Cancun for 2 weeks and are planning to do 3-4 trips to the interesting sights 1-3 hours away from Cancun.

Looking at prices for organized daytrips sounds much more expensive than getting a rental car for the three of us, despite rental cars being quite expensive.

What is the reason that rental cars are so expensive? Lots of accidents?

Is it easy to drive to Chichen Itza, Tulum etc or does an organized bus tour give you much more value?

Where would you book a rental car?

Thanks!

We go to the area 2 to 3 times a year. We always rent from Hertz or Avis. Make sure you get the third person liability insurance. Driving to those sights is easy as the roads are new and well maintained.
We do not like going on large tours as they often stop at places we do not want to see. If you drive to Tulum, Chichen Itza, etc you can hire private guides at their entrances. Also check at your resort for private cars and drivers. Cars are no more expensive in Cancun than anywhere else in the Caribbean. We also go to Aruba for 2wks in Dec and cars cost more there.

We have a compact on hold for an upcoming Cancun trip for about $150 per week. I thought that was good. Its through Avis which includes the required liability insurances. My credit card takes care of the comprehensive. Renting a car is way less in Cancun than Cabo.imo

We rented a car in Cancun

We rented a car for 7 days in Cancun last month . We paid around $35 a day because I bought their basic insurance package . The taxi from the airport is around $35 to the hotel zone , so it pays to rent from the airport instead of your hotel . Keep your eyes peeled and slow down to 30 mph when you get near the police checkpoints because they will try to give you a ticket .

There are no taxis from the airport to the hotel zone. You have to arrange transportation with a car service such as Cancun Valet or Thomas Moore. We always pick up a car at the airport.
