Dh made a salad last night that had red onions in it. He read about the recall AFTER we'd eaten. We threw out the rest of the salad and the rest of the onions. It looks like there have been no cases in New Mexico, but better be safe than sorry.

I buy a red onion about once a year when I make individually composed spinach salads with warm dressing -- usually for Christmas dinner.

There's a restaurant in our area named, "The Red Onion."
An unfortunate name, but it never caused salmonella... AFAIK.

Red onions are my favorite for salad. Guess I will leave them alone for a while. I have already been worried about romaine lettuce, but I am still eating it. I just hope I don't get sick from my salad.

For you non-farmers - how does this happen? Unknowingly, the onion field is being irrigated with water that contains animal feces. Usually, it's from a commercial farm like a dairy or chicken ranch, that isn't managing their animal waste properly, and it goes into the irrigation canals and then someone down stream waters their crops with it. It's illegal - there are strict laws about handling animal waste products. It's a big problem in states that have to water all of their crops like CA and AZ. I doesn't rain in the summer, so farmers are dependent on the irrigation canals, or they have to dig costly wells, which lower the ground water level that we all depend on for drinking water.

(Yes, I grew up on a CA farm.)

We had red onion at home and have used it - thankfully we have not gotten sick so did not throw it away. I always have red onion home. Love them in my salads (veggie/cold salad, garden pasta salad & tuna - salad or chopped in with mayo salad). Oh, I also make my own bruschetta - prefer red onion.
