Recommendation for Madeira Trip

Next September we will be spending a week in Madeira and figure since we are going all the way over there might as well spend a week or so on the mainland either in Portugal or Spain. Any recommendations? We will be flying out of DC (Dulles) and really haven't looked into flights yet so not sure what the best routing will be. Definately do not want to go through Heathrow or spend any time in the UK as I go there quite frequently for work. Any ideas much appreciated.
