Received any upgrades (other than at time of booking)

I still think the only good way to ensure an upgrade, it to complete it at time of booking.

But in July I received a Grand Desert Upgrade. Last minute booking, got offered the larger room at checkin.

Just today for Bonnet Creek I received and upgrade from 1 to 2. Only found out because I looked online. No notice generated from Wyndham.

These are 2 of maybe 4 upgrades I have received OTHER than at time of booking, since we went to this new system, what is that now, 7 years ago?

It's worked about 1/3 of the time for me as a VIPG owner. Most recently I received a free room upgrade at OTA from a one bedroom suite to a two bedroom deluxe for later this month - that was an auto-upgrade to a standard booking made months ago.

The latest major system upgrade occurred during the pandemic - in May 2020 specifically IIRC.

Yes, 7 years ago (May 2017) was when they added the ability to request an auto upgrade and removed the ability to manually upgrade an existing reservation (and in the process nerfed the undocumented feature/loophole not-to-be-named that has caused dozens of pages worth of hostile exchanges on TUG over the years).

I also have never received notice of a upgrade after I booked the room and none were available automatically. I learn when I am on the site or when I check in.

Interesting - I'd say about 33% of my auto-upgrades process after booking right at the 60 day discount window marker - I'm VIPG so I'm not eligible for an upgrade until 45 days before the start date of the reservation. When I was VIPP for two years - I'd always receive the instant upgrade if one was available - but if not I'd still choose a room upgrade and subsequently get an auto-upgrade about 50% of the time before the start date of the reservation in question. I've literally never received an impromptu upgrade upon arrival at any resort in my six years of ownership in comparison - and I've never asked upon arrival either.

After an upgrade several months back, it seems like even instant upgrades are harder to get. For instance the other day, I tried doing an instant upgrade at Governors Green from a 1BR Deluxe to 2BR Deluxe, it was showing "more than 8" 2BR DLX suites available, and when I went to book it, I got the "opt in for future upgrades when one comes available" screen. I was in my upgrade window as VIP Silver. This is just one of many examples I have seen happen. Also when it does work, and you back out, you get that "trying to make more than one booking at a time" error which has been happening for several months too, which is extremely annoying.

Seems like this website keeps regressing.

Out of curiosity, are your auto-upgrades mostly on Sat-Sat (or Sun-Sun) reservations?

No, they are typically long weekend trips from Friday to Monday.

Well, there goes my theory -- that auto-upgrades are more likely to happen on what used to be "standard" reservations -- those that begin and/or end on a weekend day.

It is not upgraded at check in or do I ask for one at check in. It is upgraded after I made the reservation when no instant upgrade was available and before I check in. I just did not know because I received no notice that it was. I only learn about when I check in or just happened to see it when I am on the website,

Well, in fairness it still might be more likely using "standard" Sat-Sat or Sun-Sun reservations, but since I very rarely make week long reservations within the discount window, I have no way of comparing the likelihood of an upgrade either way.

Gotcha - yeah I didn't always receive the upgrade notifications either - they actually seemed to have stopped working for 3-6 months starting late last year into early this year, but lately I've been getting them again so whatever issue caused them to stop working seems to have been remedied.
