I have a hold on a resort through RCI via HGVC. While checking out, I noticed a vacation protection insurance option for $34. I haven't seen this talked about recently nor did I find any info out on the RCI website.

I called and basically the $34 has some benefits if I want to cancel 30 days or sooner, a sort of tiered "lost points" system that if cancelled up to 15 days before arrival I lose 25% of the points, less 15 days, I will lose all full points - unless I have the insurance.

Does anyone know more information about this? The exact details were kinda vague over the phone but one thing they did say is that if I don't choose the protection now during the booking process, I won't be able to obtain it in a day or two or anytime in the future. I could not find anything ANYWHERE on the RCI that has information about this particular vacation protection insurance for $34.

If cancelled I would lose the transfer fee of $209, which I'm fine about (well, not really, but this is standard now), but I'm still not sure about the $34 protection insurance.

I was wondering if anyone has selected this insurance or knows more about it.

I haven't bothered since they stopped covering the exchange fee. That was a huge perk to me that was taken away.

Given that you can cancel pretty well until the last minute and still get 45 percent of your TPUs back, I don't bother. I have an exchange coming up next week that I "paid" 43 TPUs for, if I cancelled today, I'd still get 19 back.

I would guess that if your plans frequently change and it's quite likely or possible you will have to cancel, it might be worth it. We have only ever cancelled vacations due to illness, which wasn't the norm.
