RCI Extra Vacations

I've been watching a certain resort in RCI online. Lately I noticed that when a unit becomes available for exchange, it also becomes available as an Extra Vacation at a low low price. This morning my ongoing search for a week at this resort matched, so I called RCI and asked whether I could have it as an Extra Vacation instead. I was told "no". What do you think? If I release my hold is my week likely to become available as an Extra Vacation? Has anyone had success switching from an exchange to an Extra Vacation or Last Chance with RCI?

Quite possibly. "No" means "there isn't anything there right now." If you release it, one of three things will happen. 1: It gets taken by someone else with an ongoing search. 2: It gets returned to the exchange pool, but not the EV pool. 3: It goes into both exchange and EV pools.

Edited to add: a fourth possibility for completeness---it gets put in the EV pool, but not the exchange pool.

The one thing to consider is that the price won't be the same all year round---it definitely varies based on expected demand.

Risky, but I hate to pay MF + exchange fee when I could have the same thing for much less money. Yet, we already have our flights, so we really need this week. I'm quite sure if it went into the EV pool, the price would be the same as the other weeks already there because the week before is there and four weeks later - all at the same price.

I have also noticed the the resort the I am always watching comes up for exchange and extra vacation at the same time.

Last year, twice I was watching for a unit and it came up on http://www.wyndham-vacations.com/ as a rental and did not show up at RCI. So I called RCI and was told that they sometimes buy units to rent.

I got scared I would not get the unit I wanted so, both times I rented the units. It was cheaper to rent them through RCI than through Wyndham website.

Then, later in the year more of the units came up for extra vacations and exchanges on RCI. I was upset that I had paid a higher rental amount. But just decided to go ahead and book one more week with my exchange week.

So, this year I was glad I had 5 weeks exactly like I wanted. Therefore, I am going to grab the rentals, extra vacations and hold my trade and hope I get an extra trip again this year !

I would not chance not getting the week you want. Book it, book it now. Then, get a cheap extra in the future.
