RCI and Not Using My Timeshare

I currently have a timeshare and would like to join RCI with the hopes of exchanging it. (I am looking for Anaheim in late June.) I know that it might be difficult to get an exchange for that exact of a request, so I am wondering if RCI has an option for doing something with the timeshare if I don't use it for this year. My timeshare is at the Hacienda del Mar in Mexico and it is a Weeks program only; not a points resort.

I am having a hard time finding information on this idea, so hopefully someone can help me.

When you join RCI, you can deposit your week, which (if I remember correctly) allows you 1 year before your use week and 2 years after to make an exchange to someplace else through RCI, paying the exchange fee, of course.

Hi - what exactly did you have in mind? As Liz said, you do have the option of using it for an exchange in the future, but bear in mind that Mexico weeks are generally not red hot traders. Also, the farther out you put in your request, the better the chance is of getting the exchange you want. If you can deposit a holiday week, it will help your trading power.

I'm just wondering if I deposit my week with RCI, and I don't make an exchange for my week, would I have more trading power for a future exchange? In other words, if I don't use my timeshare this year, would I be able to "bank/save" it or the value of it until next year?

It was my (limited) understanding with the Points system, that once you deposited your timeshare to RCI, you were given a number of points for that timeshare. If you did not use them, you could carry them over to the next year to have more points the following year.

I do have some options for my timeshare. I have a Presidential suite (2 bedroom) from week 1 to 50 in red season. I can get ocean front view, ocean side view, or garden view. I can even get a luxury suite (1 bedroom) for two weeks at a time. So, there is a lot I can do with making reservations at my timeshare. I just don't know what date or combination of suite would give me the most power. :annoyed:

I went to the RCI site and found the question I am trying to ask:

"How much time do I have to exchange my week? What if I can't use my week before it is due to expire?
You can exchange your deposited week from one year prior through two years after the start date of the week you deposited. You have through the end of the month, regardless of the specific date of your deposited week.

If you are unable to confirm an exchange before your deposited week is due to expire, you may purchase time extensions. A three-month extension is available for $59 USD / $62 CAD, and a six-month extension is $99 USD / $105 CAD. Additional extensions may be purchased, up to a maximum of one full year."

Now, I just need someone to explain to me their answer to the question of what happens if I can't use my week before it is due to expire. I don't understand their wording. Can someone translate?

You have two years after the check-in date of the deposited week, to use your deposit for an exchange. If you can't use your exchange within the two years, you can pay for an extension, and get additional time to use it. The maximum time you can add is one year:

A three-month extension is available for $59 USD

A six-month extension is $99 USD

Additional extensions may be purchased, up to a maximum of one full year

You can only deposit a week with a check-in that occurs in the future. So, if you deposit a week with a July 1, 2009 check-in you have until July 31, 2011 to find an exchange. If you can't, you have the option of calling them at the end of July, 2011 and extending it for 3 or 6 months at the prices that exist at that time. There is little doubt that it will cost more than it does now.
