Hello,
I received a phone call from a company asking about my current Vidanta contract and if I was interested in selling it. I asked why a company would buy my timeshare and they said as part of a write off and that they got some money. I received an email offer which seems very generous and too good to be true. Has anyone experienced this? I just don’t see the catch yet, the email has a website that looks legit.
Thanks!

Unfortunately, millions of timeshare owners have received offers that are "too good to be true."

I predict the catch will be they will buy your timeshare for $1 million as soon as you send in the $5,000 processing fee.

I miss those calls. The “we have an international buyer who can’t buy at the resort and wants to buy resale. They are offering $40,000 for the timeshare but we need $1,500 upfront to list it” calls. I would keep them on the call for a bit then end the call with, send me the $40,000 check less $1,500 bucks.

I just don’t see the catch yet...

The catch is, besides the fact that they do not have a buyer, is that they will tell you that everything is in place. You just need to pay a fee/tax that sounds reasonable and legitimate but is totally bogus. They will also emphasize that the Mexican government requires you, the seller, to pay this fee before the sale, paperwork, and transfer can be legally finalized. Oh, but don't worry. The buyer has paid that fund into escrow already with which you will be reimbursed after you wire them the money.

This pretty much sums up my list. Cold call is #1 indicator of a scam. Sadly this video doesn't get enough views and many after it's too late.

NO ONE will EVER cold call you to give you money. Don't waste your time or breath listening to their crap.

I received similar calls for my Royal resort. They seemed legit until they asked me to open a "fund" account in Mexico. Yes, too good to be true, but getting $45,000 for a ts I bought on ebay....

These scams are very often targeted at owners of timeshares in Mexico.
The scammers are betting that, while the timeshare owner may doubt the "Mexican tax / fee that must be paid before the transfer can occur", their greed for the huge amount of money that ultimately awaits them will overcome that doubt.

1. NO ONE will call you out of the blue to offer to buy your timeshare.
2. You will be asked to pay an upfront fee (even after they swear there is no upfront fee.)
3. Once they have your "upfront fee", they move on to the next target.

For years I was contacted to sell my Vidanta (Grand Mayan) in San Jose del Cabo that we rescinded the day after signing the Contract.

Pretty strong evidence that either the "house" is promptly selling contact info on the side to third parties, likely as good "sucker list" prospects, or that sales weasels are taking "customer" contact info away with them when they part company with their employer, obviously unaware of the subsequent prompt rescission.
