Questions about Newport, RI

Dh and I will be spending a week in Newport RI at Wyndham Inn on the Harbor, before proceeding to NYC for a week. I've never been to Newport, so I have a few questions.

I think we are going to fly into Providence and then get to Newport from there. I hadn't planning on renting a car, but dh thinks we might want one. My questions are:

- Without a car what is the best way to get from the Providence airport to Newport?
- Without a car what is the best way to get from Newport to the Amtrak station in Providence?
- It looks like a lot of Newport is very walkable, are there places we would need a car?
- If we do want a car would it be better to just rent one for a day or two?

Any other suggestions would be wonderful. We'll be there the beginning of October.

While Newport can be done without a car it is far more convenient with one.

What a great time of year to visit Newport! The mass crowds are gone, but everything is still up and running.

Yes, providence will be your best option for airport and you will have plenty of shopping, dining, tours within walking distance. But, with that said...being that you need transportation to/from the airport I would suggest a car as there are many great things to do that are just a bit outside of walking distance or just a short drive away.

If you happen to be or are traveling with a car enthusiast a must for your trip will be Audrains Concours and Auto week which runs from Oct 1-4th this year.

Thanks! The Audrains Concours sounds fun. Some years back we went to the Concours d' Elegance at Pebble Beach and had a great time.

Our main interests are museums, both art and history, just walking around town and eating.

As far as food goes, there is ALOT right outside your door and within walking distance. In general, I find all the restaurants in Newport are pricey.

I have done a few food tours in Newport and Providence and have always found them fun. Way too much food.....but a nice way to explore.
