Questions about new SDO ownership

A bit confused about my ownership....maybe a LOT confused!

I am new to Starwood and this site but before I open my silly mouth, I want to thank all of the posters here. I have bought a few timeshares and did my research on this site before buying them. Lots of very helpful information.

That being said, here's my situation: I bought resale SDO on Ebay. The contract was for a deluxe premium one bedroom, floating week, biennial odd use. (With the help of this site, I was able to determine that there is a big difference in the one bedrooms, so I made sure that I bought the large one.) The title is now in my name and I have opened my account at StarCentral. Initially, the account reflected that I had 35,200 points left for 2011 and the 44,000 for 2013. I contacted owner services, who confirmed that yes, I could use those 35, 200 points before Dec 31 or lose them and actually offered to make a reservation for me at that time. I declined. I decided to best use the time, I would deposit this week into II, a corporate account that my contract states that I am entitled to in order to buy myself some time. I put the request to deposit in through MyStarCentral.

Today, I received an email from them stating that since I bought "resale" and not from the developer, I am not entitled to use SVN at all and if I want to deposit my week, I need my own personal II account. (This isn't a big deal to me because I already have an RCI account)...but my contract signed DID say I was entitled to that use. I will take this up with the seller.

Starwood was very rude to me, constantly reminding me that since I bought resale, I am not entitled to anything except my home resort and even have since removed the 35,200 points from my account for 2011. They told me since it was not a full week of 44,000, I could not use it until 2013. I was essentially told that since I bought resale, I have robbed Starwood owners of their privileges and should consider buying from the developer in the future instead.

When I first looked into buying timeshares, I thought I understood the best thing to do was never buy from the developer since the price is so inflated...but, buy from someone reputable. I researched the company on this site and they have been a wonderful company to deal with on other transactions as well.

My question: I bought a contract that was original to Pinnacle. I thought that I could reserve a week through Starwood and then deposit that week in II for use and also use SVN internal exchange...as my contract states. Have I been had????? Regardless, I did truly buy SDO because my husband loves golf and I think the premium 1 bedroom will get me good exchanges if I decide to go that route. However, Starwood insists that I reserve through them but treat me as if I am an indigent soul and took 2011 points from my account after transfer of ownership. Can they do that????:ponder:

If the week is worth 44000 SOs, but the seller only had 37000 SOs remaining, then that means he/she used part of the SOs (could have been for just one night somewhere, or he/she could have combined the missing 7000 with other SOs owned). Unfortunately, that does mean you can't reserve an "entire week," which is what is required to deposit to II.

You're going to have to take it up with the seller -- hopefullly you didn't reimburse the 2011 maintenance fees.

If it's one of the big resale outfits, I would ask them to transfer a week to your RCI account (I don't think II transfers weeks, but I could be wrong). Then you would at least get something in return.

And, yes, Starwood is unnecessarily rude to resale buyers. One would think they would try to win them over and treat them as potential customers -- but, nope!

Good luck!

Edited to add: Sorry, my math is off. I just reread your post and see the number of remaining SOs was actually 35200, not 37000. But, the concept is still the same.

SDO is a voluntary resort, so the "club membership" (SVN) does NOT transfer with resale. This would have been marked on the Estoppel letter ("Resale Information Sheet") you should have requested prior to making payment on the purchase.

No SVN, no SOs for "internal exchange". Any SOs you were seeing would have been an error, which it sounds like they corrected.

I was thinking the same thing....

Thanks for the quick response. Yes, I thought the seller had probably used some points to stay a few nights somewhere. I think that the company I bought from will deposit something into my RCI account for me. Thanks for the great suggestion.

My account still shows "SO's"....

My account still reflects SO of 44,000 points, biennial odd years and SVN ownership. It was the 35,200 points for 2011 that has been removed within the last 12 hours from my account. But just to be clear, my account still reflects SO's and SVN. When I call them, they offer to make a reservation for me. When I use email, I get rudeness. Looks like a phone call would be better. I think that I will wait a few days, though. Glad that I requested the online chat session in which the Starwood rep confirmed those points to use of 35,200 and the offer of a reservation. Anything helps. :)

I'd be careful of any reservation that they make using SOs that shouldn't exist...

Exactly. Even if they confirm a new reservation with using StarOptions, they will almost certainly not be honored. Your deed does not include SOs since it's a voluntary resort. If this was promised you by the seller, I suggest you contact them. You will be able to deposit into II or use SDO in future.

It is not at all uncommon for there to be some errors with Staroptions when a deed is transferred from one owner to another. As others have said, even if they let you make a reservation, once Starwood realizes their mistake, they will cancel it and remove the Staroptions from the Acct.

Searching in RCI today and noticed there are 2 codes for SDO - 5247 and D524. Is the 2nd code new, I hadn't noticed before?

My account page indicates that my "Weekly Starpoints Values" are 42,000 and 80,000 for my SVV and WKORV-N units respectively. However, I have no doubt that should I try to convert to StarPoints, they'd catch it and reverse it.
