Question with canceling a SW award ticket

I have 2 "old" standard award tickets that are set to expire on 4/4/12- they have already been re-issued from last year and now cannot be re-issued again. :annoyed: spaced.

My question is, can I book a flight then cancel that flight and have a credit put into my account for a future purchase so that I can use for June? Thanks.

I don't think so. I think the expiration will still go back to the original expiration date, in this case the April, 2012 date. But to be sure, you could call Southwest and ask.

That won't work as travel has to be completed by April 4.

Can't be extended??

Can't they be extended again for the $50 fee? (I know I have very old awards....we've never tried to use....I think we can activate them for a fee....but we've really gotten away from SW so I dont' know for sure)

If you can't use them and they're about to expire you might contact a medical volunteer group and donate them - they are always looking for tickets to fly kids and family to hospitals, etc. Or even a charity that takes "make a wish" kids on trips. There are plenty of really worthy causes.

They can only be re-issued once. If you have never re-issued, I think you have 24 months from when they first expired to re-issue old reward points for $50 each one.

I wasn't going to be able to use them, but a fellow tugger contacted me and I was able to make reservations for them. Win Win situation. (this is why I love TUG. :cheer: )

Yes, that is the rule for awards that were issued when the old rules were in effect. However, SW has said they might reduce the time allowed for reissuing old awards to one year.

For awards issued during the transition to SW's new frequent flyer system (which started about a year ago), there are different, more restrictive rules. There has been a lot of discussion of this on www.Flyertalk.com. A lot of people on Flyertalk have Rapid Rewards awards that are expiring and cannot be renewed.
