Direct exchanges are hard to do - your best best is to rent a prime date using your own timeshare and use the funds to rent exactly what you want.

I agree - direct exchanges sound nice in theory but hard to do because it's hard to get two owners who love their home resorts to agree on "fair value".

For example, would you think that trading a peak week at MOC in a 1BR is equal to a peak week in a studio at DVC? I suspect most MOC owners not familiar with DVC would not like that trade. You might point to the high maintenance fees on Maui and the fact that the MFs on the DVC points required to rent a studio are much lower than the Maui MFs. Or you can point to the rates of $1000+/night for a 1BR at MOC on marriott.com. Yet DVC points can rent for $20-$22 per point so a peak week at a DVC resort in a studio (around 25 points/night) would most likely rent for $500+/night, or 3500+/week, which may be more than a 1BR MVC on Maui on Redweek. And, unlike MVC Abound charts, the DVC points charts price 1BRs at double the prices of studios (and 2BRs at close to triple the studio price) which make them really expensive to book/rent.

And all that before lookin at any trust issues involved in a transaction like this where one owner typically gives up their timeshare first and needs to trust the other owner to keep their end of the deal.

The route suggested by @DeniseM eliminates these issues since every owner would get their fair rental value. It's definitely more hassle, and may involve tax consequences, but I've given up on trying for direct exchanges years ago because there are just too many things to worry about.

I did a direct exchange a couple years ago for my week at Westin St. John (Westin Vacation Club) 2BR for his DVC 2BR. It worked out great. But we had to correspond a few times, get to know each other to build trust first. You're never going to get an exact value match, but probably within 90%, and then you both save on taxes and exchange fees, so it's a win/win

I've looked at this a number of times over the years. It's almost impossible to find someone where it fits for both and both are realistic on the value of what they bring to the table.

I've done a number of direct exchanges over the years. Generally I've found them by paying attention to what people mention on the forums and looking at what they own to see if there's a match to be made. I've advocated for a direct exchange forum in the past but that's never been well received by the powers that be.
