I am trying to plan some flights from Oahu to Kauai and I was looking at an 11am fllight. How much time should I leave coming from Ko olina to get back to the airport, return the rental car and drop off luggage?

It was. A fairly easy process last summer. I would say an hour unless it is a heavy traffic period..rush hour.

If it is a weekday, then allow lots of time. You have an 11:00 am flight, that means you will be driving through rush hour. I don't know why they call it this. There is no rushing involved. Honolulu traffic is horrible. Allow lots of time.

If it is a weekend, would 8 or 830 am be reasonable or too much time?

On a weekend at that time, it should take about 20 - 25 mins from Ko Olina to the airport. I think it depends on what airline you're flying as well. I would allow more time for Hawaiian or Go Mokulele. Island air has a smaller terminal to navigate and you shouldn't have to show up as early.

We did this earlier this year -- we left Ko Olina 2.5 hours before our flight time -- it took 30 minutes to get to HNL from Ko Olina, I drove straight to the curb, dropped off DW and kids and gave luggage to the sky cap and then drove alone and dropped the car at the car rental agency.

I was back at the airport 1.5 hours before the flight and security was negligible.

This worked well for me -- it was a Saturday departure, but I never noticed bad traffic on Oahu until you got to Honolulu/Waikiki.

Best,

Greg

2.5 sounds good

I've done island hoping every time I've gone to Hawaii. Traffic can bite you, security can bite you (I once spent over an hour in a security line in Maui). Better safe than sorry. If you get there too early, some airlines will allow you to get on an earlier flight if there is room, so no real loss....

Just to be safe I'd leave by 8:00 AM, 8:30 at the latest (on a Sat. or Sun.). The trip to the airport takes 20-30 minutes unless you hit some traffic, which is not unusual.

Once I got onto the freeway right as you leave the Ko'Olina resort and the traffic was stopped. We waited in the same place for over an hour while the police cleared an accident. When they shut down that stretch of road you're stuck! There are no other routes to get you back to HNL.

Just did this 2 weeks ago. Two hours is plenty of time, but if you want to be extra safe, allow 2.5. Anymore than that and you'll be wasting a lot of time at the airport.

Check in online then you won't have to worry about the airline giving away your seats if you get to the airport later than expected.

On most mornings, coming from Ko Olina, traffic should be negligible after 8-830am. You might hit some slow down near the H1/H2 merge, but by that time, it should be flowing nicely. The next slow down occurs after the airport at the Middle St merge so you won't hit that at all.

2-2.5 hrs should be more than enough time to drop off your rental car and checked bags.

One thing though, if there's one significant accident anywhere on that stretch from Kapolei to Aiea, good nite! You'll be squeezing cheeks cursing me!

I had to pick my wife up on Wed near Ward Center. It's about 6 miles from my house. It took 2 hours! That is an extreme case of bad weather, a water main break and an accident all happening simultaneously. But, it was horrible.

I would say you need to get there by 9:30. It's about 21 miles. With no traffic, it is about 30-35 minutes. I would give it an hour to hour and a half travel time. Leave at 8 to be safe. 8:30-9 if you are a daredevil.

Remember, there are a lot of interisland flights, so if you miss your flight, you will likely get the next one. It happens all the time especially coming back from Kauai. Lihue is a terrible airport with horrible service.

What are people's view on booking an extra night and checkout late afternoon(either cash using MOW or other discount code), DC pts or MR pts to deal with the fact that my flight from Kauai to mainland is leaving 9 PM at night. Normally I would not even consider but 10AM checkout until 9PM flight is a long spread and I will have my kids with me.

booking extra night - a sound plan

We had exactly your situation. Thought that we could "occupy" ourselves for the time we had to wait. Ended up reading books and bothering the waterfowl in the exterior lobby of the KBC. It would have been wonderful to have a room to shower in and a legitimate access to the amenities at the KBC. We felt a bit out of place since we'd come from Poipu. We did utilize the shuttle when we turned in our rental car (which must be done waaay before your plane leaves.) And got a ride back to the hotel, where the book reading continued...and my kids are not really kids anymore, they were super bored.

extra night

For several years now we've been booking a late night flight to the mainland, and booking an extra night at the resort so we can stay in the room until the late afternoon. It's so much more relaxed not having rush to get everything packed, and then been well rested when we leave for the airport.
