I read somewhere (I think on this board) that if you make a reservation on line with Marriott rewards they will automatically debit the points required from your rewards account? Is this true? If so how do they know if you want to order a rewards package to cover the reservation. Do they ask you that when you are making a reservation on line and you can tell them you want a certain rewards package? Do they then ask you how many airline miles you want and what ailine FF account # to deposit them to? I have made reservations at Marriott's using points for one or two nights but not using a rewards package so I am trying to figure out how one does this on line.

Kathy-
The only time I redeemed for a package, I did it over the phone. I reserved the hotel using points online then called with info to book the package. You can definitely make reservations online, even if you don't have enough points. Then when you're ready to book the package, call MR and ask them to link the hotel res. to a travel certificate with a package.

But I do have enough points so if say I reserve a room in Paris for 7 nights on line how does the system know that I want to use a rewards package instead of being debited for 7 nights of individual points per night when I make the reservation?
My understanding is that they immediately debit the points from your account when you make the reservation on line.

I have never ordered a travel package, however, I think you can order the travel package on line. Once you do this the hotel cert will show-up in your on-line account.

Then when you make your hotel reservation it will ask you if you want to use that cert or order an new one.

Once you have a rewards reservation you need to be sure that it is connected to a travel package certificate. If there is no certificate attached to a rewards reservation, at 7 days out from check-in your rewards account will be debited for the amount of rewards points needed for the no. of days for the hotel stay(i.e. a 7 day stay in the case of a travel package). If you look online at your reservations and there is a statement to the effect that there is no certificate attached to the reservation you need to call Marriott Rewards and have them attach the certificate to the reservation. You should also see an unused certificate in your rewards account. I've used several travel packages and have had problems with the issue of certificates not being attached properly to reservations.

I just did that. It will say you don't have enough points. THe system doesn't know you have a certificate. Just call and attach it. Marriott vacation specialists are very nice and helpful.

If you're going to stay one or two nights and use points, then the online reservation system and it's way of taking your points works fine. BUT if you're using a travel reward, IMHO, I'd call and deal with a real person.

You can make the reservation on line and then call the Marriott advisor to attach the reservation to the certificate. As another poster stated, you have to do this at least 7 days before check in, though some hotels, like the Grand Flora in Rome required it 14 days in advance (something like that). With my Italy trip with points, I made the reservations first, then I had them connect to the travel packages later and I did this by phone.

I just had to do this...I purchased the travel package last week and the reservation still deducted the pounts automatically.

I called today and had them put the points back in my account and attach it to the travel package - they just sent another confirmation dated from the original transaction with the resie now attached to the travel package.

See this is what I am concerned about. I am afraid that if I make my reservation on line that the system will not give me a option to select a air/hotel 7 night package on line and that the standard points for 7 nights at whatever hotel I am reserving will be automatically be deducted from my account if I say I am using reward points

That is what will happen. That's why you have to call the next day and tell them you want the reservation you made on line to be attached to the travel package. They can redeposit your points and then take them out for your travel package. Why would someone go to this trouble one may ask? What if you find the perfect hotel available at night and you don't want to let it get away? If you don't have that urgency, just call Marriott in the morning and let them do everything for you. It made my life easier.

Exactly! if I am on line looking for the hotel I want and the dates I want and it comes up as a standard award I want to book it right then and there before it gets away.
