Put a Offer in on a House Yesterday --- Competing against 5 Other Offers

Back to Sugarcubesea, I hope the buyer who beat her out of the lake cottage is going to live there, and not turn it into an AirBnB.

I hope that as well... The good news is we got a lot more garbage out for garbage day today....I'm amazed at all of the stuff we have gotten over so years of living this house.

If you are undertaking a Viking-like purge similar to one we recently completed, a weekly moment of entertainment can be had by watching the reaction of the garbage crew as they see just how much can be placed at the curb....
It was also interesting to note a couple of items that did not make it into the crusher but rather the cab as a couple of discarded items may have had some value to one (or both) crewmembers. Sort of a live lab exercise in "one man's trash is another man's treasure " ..

That's pretty close - well done!
'97 purchase price was $128k
Recent appraisal was $230k.

It is mind blowing the cost difference in housing throughout this country. When I hear the prices people pay for houses elsewhere, I don't see how they can afford them (and in too many cases -sadly- they cant). If I could magically transport my house to the Bay area, I suspect it would be greater than $1 million...especially given our lot size.

I guess the saying is true - real estate is all about location, location, location!

Sort of reminds me of Singapore. Small semi-detached home, USD5 Million. 1000 sq ft condo US$1.5M. These are not downtown area. I told my friends to sell their homes and retire in Australia. People who own homes in the SF Bay area can sell their homes and retire out of state.

Lovely!

I know what you mean on county taxes - another 3 blocks north and my property taxes would be a great deal more.
We're in California and live a few miles from the Apple Campus in Cupertino. Cupertino has always been a high priced area (used to be because of our school system) we were always advertised in China. When we bought down the street in Los Altos we originally put in bids on 4 houses which we were outbid by over $60,000 and this was in 1990 with over 20 bids on most houses. When we moved our property tax was almost $10,000.
When the in laws passed we bought their house out of the trust (they owned 3 houses). This house is 4 bedroom,2.5 baths and 2400sq ft. and on our same street just about 4 blocks up the street. Our street runs thru both Los Altos and Cupertino. We added a 800sqft game room when I retired.
Now our property tax is under $2,000 because we got to keep their pre prop 13 tax rate though we had to pay over a million to buy it out of the trust. Our other house had a pool and this one doesn't but does have a running creek behind our yard which helps lull us to sleep.

That's why we are staying put. Our taxes are so low (although we could do the one time exemption) but at this point we would also have to pay some income tax. No thanks, we'll just stay put. And hopefully pass it along to our kids one day so that someone can keep that exemption!

We also will be staying and passing this house to the kids. Hopefully they to will be able to stay under prop 13 if California keeps it. Currently (we've now been in this house for 12 years) our next door neighbor in his 2400 sqft house pays over $17,000 for property tax and is still making house payment so in our area is forced to also carry flood insurance.

Back when I was moving out of my duplex (to the CCRC where I live now) I was getting rid of everything including the furniture. About 2 or 3 days before trash pickup day I would put an item out on the curb. Most of the time, large or small, it was gone in hours. I did the same thing with the same result when I sold my Son's house for him.

I so agree, we put out this end table that was very beat up and one of our garbage crew took it
