Hi,

We will be staying in Wyndham Old town Alexandria in Aug. We want to take some public transits to Philadelphia for one day round trip. Not looking for a lot, but want to taste a little bit of american history.

Is this practical? Any good places recommanded for the 7-8 years kid?

Thanks,
Jian

Public transit? No. Amtrak. Yes. There is a gap between Perryville, MD and Newark, DE that public transportation won't get you.

Take the metro to either the alexandria station (next to National Airport) or Union Station and take the Amtrak. Prices are reasonable.

If you check Amtraks website you can get a flavor of trains available from Alexandria to Philly. King St station is only a short walk from the Wyndham. It is about a 3 hour ride and costs aywhere from $70 - $90 a person, depending on train taken. It appears, at least on the day I checked ( 7/23/08), the latest train back was about 5PM. If you left at about 7:30 am you could get maybe 6 hours in Philly.

Everyone's ignoring the Chinatown buses, yes, they not only do DC-NYC, but DC-Philly and others. $20 RTpp is a steal. Google it.

WOW that's really a good deal! The Philly terminal is at 121 N 11th Street, which I think is the Trailways bus station. From there it's about an 8 block walk or a short cab ride to Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and a variety of other places of interest. It would be a long day!
