It seems different resorts have their floating week owners choose their weeks differently. At Blue Tree Resort, an owner completes a request form at the beginning of the year for the week they want. In fact, you select 3 different weeks, in the order which desire it. Management will send you a confirmation for the week you've been assigned from the 3.

Other's will allow their owners to select the week they want, any time during the year, if it's available of course.

If you're an owner of a floating week for a resort in Florida, how does your resort do it and which resort would it be? Do you prefer either way? There are of course, drawbacks and benefits of each. :ponder:

We formerly owned units at 2 nice floating-week Orlando timeshares, which by coincidence are (a) right across the street from Blue Tree Resort & (b) right next door to Blue Tree, respectively.

Both of ours were managed by VRI. The procedure for reserving a floating week was to phone the VRI reservation desk in California & tell'm what you want. If the week you picked was available, then -- BAM ! -- you got it. If not, you could ask for some other specific week, or ask what weeks were still available & pick 1 of those.

The year was half over when we bought 1 of our Orlando biennial-floating week units. When we phoned the VRI reservation desk, all the remaining weeks were in October. Rather than lose out, we picked 1 of those & enjoyed a nice surprise Orlando vacation that fall.

There was no deadline for putting in our reservation requests, but of course the longer we waited the lower our chances of getting our preferred time. And people waiting too long risked getting completely shut out that year, despite paying their maintenance fees & everything.

If the people who waited too late & got shut out wondered what happened to their weeks that they paid for but could not reserve, the explanation was simple -- those were the vacant weeks that went by earlier in the year when some paid-for units stayed empty & went unused because nobody reserved them.

I think 1 good effect of a forced deadline for putting in a floating-week reservation request is forcing people to plan & reserve early, cutting their risk of losing out by dilly-dallying. Calling the reservation desk any time you want, rather than on some set schedule, is OK also. That puts the opportunity for getting the most prime weeks, as well as the risk of getting shut out, squarely on the shoulders of the individual owners.

Soleil Management, which operates Tahiti out in Vegas, has a system where you can go online and check the calendar for the week you want months ahead or a week ahead. If the week is available, just select the dates and you get a confirmation number.

No deadline, but there must have been an earliest day you could call, no?

I'm sure there must have been a limit as to how far out a floating week could be reserved. But it was also possible to pay ahead on maintenance fees (estimated amount before billing went out) in order to reserve earlier.

We own a 'preferred' floating week which means we can have any week except the 'prime' ones which are end of May to end of August and the 2 weeks at Christmas, which suits us just fine. Some owners have fixed weeks but can request a different week/unit if it is available. The prime floating weeks owners choose their week/unit in the spring for the following year. Each July 1st the reservations open up for preferred weeks owners to choose their week for the following year. The maintenance fee for the next year must be paid before choosing the week. We used to phone down July 1st and tell them which week we would like and since we usually wanted a March week when our kids were out of school, we always got what we wanted, right down to the floor/unit we requested. When a new office manager started about 20 years ago she decided that all owners of floating weeks needed to put their requests in writing with up to 3 choices of weeks and 3 units/floors for each week, and send them via mail or email into the office a week before the deadline. There would be no more phone requests. All the requests would then be put into a bin and drawn out one at a time and the requests filled in the order that they were drawn. The office staff takes a week or so to put all the requests into the system and then send out confirmations. We should be hearing later this week which unit we got for October of 2022..

If we want to spacebank the week we are supposed to let the resort know and they would then choose a week and send it into RCI. It didn't take a few of us owners too long to figure out they were submitting weeks with a lower trading power. The last 2 times we planed to spacebank the week, I requested a week and an ocean front unit that I knew had a better trading power and didn't let the resort know I was exchanging. A few weeks after we got the confirmation I would call RCI and tell them our plans had changed and we were spacebanking the week. That worked great!

When DH & I started going down without the kids we requested the week before or after Easter and picked up an Extra or Last Call week for before or after. We had no problem getting our 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice. Lately, since we started spending the winter in Belize, we have been going down to Florida in mid-late October and still haven't had any problems getting our 1st or 2nd choice.

If you're an owner of a floating week for a resort in Florida, how does your resort do it and which resort would it be?

We owned (no longer, thankfully) a floating week at Coconut Mallory in Key West. I believe that all weeks there are / were "floating" weeks (i.e., no "fixed" week ownerships).

CM took reservations only by a "telephone derby" for the following calendar year. Annual "derby" opened on a specific date in September, iirc. All weeks were available to reserve. No "advance requests" or "priority" or any other "special" status; strictly first come, first served. In our few years of ownership there, we were always able to successfully reserve a week of our choice. Our displeasure with CM was not related to their reservation process, but due to their consistent maintenance and management shortcomings.
