I used II many months ago to try to get any of a number of resorts on their directory for the first half of June -- so far without any luck. Yesterday I called the II customer service and was told that it is almost impossible to find an exchange this year. Any comments from your past experience would be appreciated.

In order to get an exchange you want, you have to institute an ongoing search at the earliest moment you are eligible. I've heard of members doing it in the middle of the night. Waiting for a rare exchange to become visible on the website or by phone is folly. Ongoing searches are fulfilled first.

If II customer service said it was nearly impossible for June this year, what made you think it would be different here?

You might try VRBO to rent a lodging if you need to be there. Hotel systems wherein you have status might help too.

Good Luck. Scotland is beautiful in June.

Oh,and Welcome to TUG!

To add to what Jim said, the online inventory is the leftovers, after all ongoing requests have been filled - the prime exchanges are all snagged with ongoing requests and never go into the online inventory.

I sometimes see summer Scotland online at DAE. You might also check with them for an exchange.

www.daelive.com

DAE lets you do a search without depositing a week, and you only have to deposit and pay when they find an exchange for you. Also, their membership is free.

DAE has a July week in Scotland sitting online right now - Loch Rannoch Highland Club, studio, for check-in July 20, 2012. They will take just about any deposit you want to give them for a trade.

Thanks Carolinian for the link to DAELIVE! -- this will be valuable in my future attempts to exchange -- alas my plans are to be there in June 2012 so July is not an option. Also by the time I checked the July opening was gone! So I'm heartened that Scotland is the place to be in the summer and I now know that I must be on the ball 24x7 if I want to be successful. I've about given up on the exchange and have resorted to plan B -- Scottish colleague has made reservations for lodging at Aigas fur June 2.

So if I may learn more -- would I have been able to use my submitted week(s) to II using daelive? How would that work if the resort is not on II's network?

Thanks again for your help!:)

You couldn't - you would need to have a week you can deposit with DAE.

How would that work if the resort is not on II's network?

On both ends - the deposit week and the exchange week - the resorts must be affiliated with II, to use II.

But DAE is a completely different exchange company, so you'd have to contact them to see if they will accept your week for deposit.

It sounds like you might benefit from exploring the independent exchange companies - they are more user-friendly, usually take deposits fairly late (60-90 days) and have "niche" markets that make it easier sometimes to find what you are looking for. There is lots of info on this site about all the companies currently in business.

What resort do you own? What dates do you need?

While you could not use a week already deposited with one exchange company to exchange through another, you could use a future week at your resort that is not deposited yet.

I am a UK member of DAE and the rules are slightly different, but when I was a member of the US office of DAE, you could join and open a search at DAE without making a deposit. It was only necessary to make a deposit and pay the exchange fee when they found a match for you. Perhaps that is still the rule there.

Generally, DAE will take most deposits to trade against, although there are a few points systems they cannot take.
