I recently installed a Linksys wireless G printer server to allow the wireless connection of a Brother laser printer to my system. It works, but I can't seem to change any of the printer settings. When I try to uncheck an option, for example, it just returns to the previous setting almost immediately. In addition, that printer is not my 'default' and I can't change that either. Any thoughts?

You should be able to change it to be the default by going to Control Panel/Printers and Faxes and then right click on the printer and select "Set as default printer" - I'm using XP so if you're on Vista it may be different.

When I do that it switches the default check mark momentarily then goes back to the original printer. Apparently, I have to trun off the remote printer manager entirely to make it switch to another printer.

Did you try brother support or support forums?

There's really not nearly enough information to understand the problem, Frank, and even if there was, I don't have that setup here.

I have an old HP4P, with a parallel to network adapter (hard wired network) and it works just fine.

If I were to buy a new printer (there's really nothing wrong with my 10 year old HP4P b&w laser printer, except that it's very slow at printing) I would probably buy a network-ready Brother laser printer. The newer ones are much faster than my HP4P, but I don't print enough to justify replacing it.
