We had planned a week at the Pulse NYC in early June, but now the hotel remains closed until mid June. I called the hotel number to get info, but it auto-transferred me to an "advocates" office who informed me the 4950 points for our reservation would go into the 120 holding account, and not back to the years from which they were used. The rep claimed that since NY government is keeping the hotel closed, they handle it as if I canceled my hotel stay. This is the first time this has happened to us, so any information from the forum is appreciated.

Stay safe - good luck to us all.

That is the current policy. Before the pandemic, it would have gone into a holding account with 60 day advance reservations, back to the original use year. The new policy means your points should expire end of next year. It might take a day or 2 for the correct end date to show up online. So, at least you'll have a 120 out reservation window. You could always reschedule it to late June, July, August, etc. if you really want to go.

Thank you for the info. Just to follow up on that line of thinking; if the resort had a fire and couldn't accommodate my stay, would the points still go into the holding account? For the June NYC Pulse, we had tickets for six shows, but now that Broadway is closed until Sept at the earliest, I don't think we'll get up there before June 2021.

Also, the problem I see using 5000 points with this 120 day window is you really have to hope there's a late cancellation, or go to a resort that has generally low-demand year round. I always used the 13 month booking window to my advantage, which is obviously not the case when you're looking only 4 months ahead.

Steve: Doesn't this link mean that Lee has until December 31, 2021 to use these points, even though she can only reserve at most 120 days before she wants to go

I look at the policy as a positive. You get 18 months to use the points, you just can only book 4 months out. For me that means book for this summer, into resorts I can drive to, or probably Shoulder/off season if I wait until next year.

Maybe I’m in the minority, but I feel MVCI has been more than generous here.

Yes, that's what it means. The 120 day will be hard to get into the more popular places. For some places, it's easy. I have used them for more than 5 years at Palm Desert in high season, which is late winter out there. That's within 60 days. I use them all the time in Branson, in fact heading there next Monday. Within 60 days reservations are available at virtually every resort at least 1 month a year, including Hawaii. That being said, next year may be different as now you have all the people who pushed their trips from this year to next year. That will likely mean reduced availability. The people not using holding account points will get first pick, and then the 120 day people. But that's fair in my eyes. The problem of course is there will be more weeks desired than weeks, there is no way to solve that really. The best thing you can do is watch on mvci daily when it comes time to reserve.

I don't feel cheated in any way. We've had no problem chewing through our annual 10k points since we joined in 2014. We purchased when we were at Kauai Lagoons after getting married on Shipwreck Beach in a double ceremony. We were going there for two weeks at a time, and that alone was 9500 points. We just booked for Marco Island Crystal Shores for a driving vacation in August.

I just wanted to re-ask; if the resort had a fire and couldn't accommodate my stay, would the points still go into the holding account?

Thanks!

If the resort were closed and not available you would likely just lose the week and still have to pay the fees if you were within the 60 days window under the usual rules for weeks. For points if you cancel at 60 days or under but before the day of check in, the points would go into the 60 day holding account and expire the end of the UY the points came from. It's no different than owning a condo and it's not available. The current policy for this unique situation is quite bit better than what would happen under the normal rules but I realize it still stinks to lose a vacation and value of a week(s) or points.

Even better, if the resort had a fire and you owned weeks there..... There may even be a special assessment... Depends.

Fact is that you may not get anything. That is what happened to some people who had reservations cancelled at resorts closed due to hurricane damage.
