Here's a Story....

2 families intend on a 2 week trip to Scotland/Ireland, a week in each destination.

1 family has 2 SVO's the other has none.

Is it worth it to use Starpoints on hotels and purchase extra starpoints (at a discount on certificates, (40k for 775, 80k for $1550, upto 6 purchases) for the entire group and use a tour group that does private tours?

Or sell off the 2 weeks for that use year and go with an all inclusive tour package? They currently run about $3200/person (including hotel/air/tour)

Or use the accumulated starpoints for airfare?

Airfare on an airline like delta looks like about 80k points roundtrip, 320k points for our family of 4. (approx $3400 in maintenance fees).

Just looking for some tug advice as its a large trip either way. Would we be able to sell our 2 SVR weeks and recover our mf costs? We've never sold our weeks before.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

In this economy, timeshares at SVR are being given away for free - literally. Selling them for a profit is not really a viable option.

If you mean renting - it's nearly the same story - Florida is overbuilt with timeshares and does not command high rental prices. You might cover your maintenance fees + $200 profit, and that's about it.

A group tour is going to be mostly Sr. citizens, and you will be locked into the tours agenda. In an English speaking country, you really don't need a tour. Just get good guide book - Rick Steves has recommended agendas in his books that will get you started.

Here is the Starwood website with more info. about transferring points to airlines - http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/account/starpoints/transfer/airline_partner_list.html

You should compare the airline option, to how far your points will get you when you use them for hotel stays and decide which is the best value.
