I have an opportunity to purchase some FF points from El Cid/Mazatlan, an affiliated resort. Are these treated any differently than "real" Fairfield points? Anything else to watch out for?

Affiliated resorts are subject to change. If you want FF points, you should get them at a FF resort.

Wyndham resale is easy and currently inexpensive

Double what he said. Buying Wyndham Points at an affiliated resort is almost a guarantee of problems down the road. Wyndham Points based in the US at Wyndham resorts are readily available at deep discount prices.
