We know that owning a platinum season floating week gets you a week during that season (which weeks are platinum varies by location).

Question is, without trading into II, within the MVCI system, can a Platinum owner merely forego booking its platinum week in a given year and book a gold season (or other “off season”) week if it so chooses Instead?

No. Deeded ownership is for a time period, not a status level. Don't get caught up in the names. Some are red, white, and blue.

Having said that, if your week is enrolled in the points program, you could elect points and be free to book whenever/wherever you want for the amount of points that your week generates.

Think of it this way. If you, a platinum owner, was able to book a gold week, and the last gold week owner wanted to book his gold week, it would not be there.

To add, one can also trade through II as well as privately privately and potentially through independent exchange companies as well.

We deposited our Platinum week into II and I can exchange it for any season/week that is available when I want to travel.

Some MVC resorts, for example a couple of European ones, have Gold Holiday floating weeks which allow owners to book in Gold Season.
This is subject to availability and of limited numbers though, to ensure that there is sufficient inventory for Gold week owners to book in their own season.
