has anyone ever encountered this before??
we are at the JW Marriott in desert ridge (phoenix, AZ). i inquired about
the usage and was told at this resort there is a 35.00 per day per person charge to use it here beacuse this a resort hotel. has anyone heard of this before?? what is the purpose of being platinum and then being charged for the use of the concierge lounge? she said it covered breakfast and drinks.
this seems very odd to me. any help from anyone?? i don't believe that i
read that about the platinum level (or is it in the small print somewhere??)
thanks for your help on this one!

Resort properties are not included in the platinum benefit of "free breakfast" or concierge level access. Resort properties offer concierge level floors with amenities that usually go above concierge amenities at regular full service properties. Think Tradewinds Club in Aruba or Club 91 in Cancun. These are profit centers for the resort.

Dioxide is correct. This Concierge Lounge Access benefit is available at every location offering a lounge, except resort locations. See below from the Marriott Rewards Terms and Conditions:

4.Guaranteed Concierge/Executive/Club Lounge Access* at JW Marriott, Autograph Collection, Renaissance Hotels and Marriott Hotels & Resorts during normal hours of operations: Monday to Friday. Outside the U.S. and Canada, continental breakfast is available 7 days a week. For JW Marriott, Autograph Collection, Renaissance Hotels and Marriott Hotels & Resorts without a Concierge/Executive/Club Lounge, Elite Members will still receive a complimentary continental breakfast for weekday stays, Monday through Friday; simply show Membership Card and room key in the hotel restaurant.
*Not available at resort locations.

They were written to cater to business travellers. (Primarily traveling alone.) :D

But Club 91, Tradewinds, and (I believe) Desert Ridge lounges are a step above the regular concierge lounges. Free alcohol etc. The Bangkok Resort and Spa (not a Marriott much longer  ) has a wonderful lounge that they did allow Plats and Golds to access.

I do ALWAYS ask every property for free breakfast if they are a resort or on weekends (Plats are not supposed to get breakfast on weekends regardless of being a non-resort). My success rate is about 50% in getting bfast for 2. Not too shabby.

Mr. Vikr is right...Desert Springs has what they call the "cloud club" concierge lounge, extra cost for all but discounted for elites. Never felt the need myself...

You have to be very careful of all the charges in the Concierge Lounges.. At the Marriott Lincolnshire resort wine is out on the counter but there is a charge of about $8.50 a glass I believe. Can't count the number of Elite members who have been surprised it's not free and had to pay after pouring a few.

That is not unique to Lincolnshire, that is the case at all the Marriott lounges.
There is always a slip you are to fill out for any drinks you use.
Except for the pay resort lounges, I have never seen free alcohol.
Always an honor bar.

We recently stayed at the Marriott in Budapest. We were using points for the reservation but we paid extra to "upgrade" to the concierge floor which gave us free WiFi plus use of the lounge, including breakfast and evening snacks. Each evening we had a few glasses of wine, along with our snacks. There was no additional charge for the wine. They also served beer but no hard liquors.

Weekend access for platinums

If I recall correctly, we have received concierge access on weekends as long as the lounge was open. This includes London Regents Park (using points) and Copenhagen Denmark (paid stay)and several Marriott hotels in the US--Portland OR and San Francisco come to mind... In Copenhagen it was a true buffet with wine and beer--it was enough to eat your dinner if you wanted!

And even as a Gold I think we got breakfast on weekends even if the lounge was closed (US hotels).

Maybe each hotel manager has some discretion on how they handle the weekends...
