Hi
My son goes to Temple and even though we are from Pa I am sorry to say I don't know what to do in Phil. We will be there for the weekend this weekend and am looking for ideas of things to do and nice places to eat, especially Italian. We are staying at the Holiday Inn on Walnut. Thanks.

Karen

I would recommend the Helium Comedy Club at 20th and Sansom for night time.

For dinner, www.victorcafe.com. I havent been there but my Italian partner has and its on my list of places to try. I need to do that very soon :D

A non-italian great choice is Continental Martini Bar at 138 Market Street. For something less casual, get some cheese steaks since that is what Philly is known for.

Double deck bus tour of Philly is supposed to be good if you dont get a groupon.

Have a great time!

We stayed at that Holiday Inn a couple years ago. We enjoy walking - and we did quite a lot of it that weekend!! We didnt actually plan anything, just did the bus tour and got on/off whenever it looked interesting.

The double deck bus tour was wonderful, and we had a fantastic guide who pointed out all the sites and was really interesting - visited the Liberty bell, walked all over that area, visited the "Rocky" statue and went thru the museum.... We did the bus tour the first day, and went back to the square and wandered around again all day Saturday, Sunday we went to the zoo. .

I don't remember where/what we ate most of the weekend - I know we had ribs somewhere (Famous Dave's?? maybe) and wherever it was they made me the BEST mudslide I have ever had:)

Skip the cheese steaks, horrendous things. I was really looking forward to trying them before we went as I'd heard so many good things about them but when the time came....... Tasteless thinly sliced beef on a cheap roll smothered in plastic cheese from a bottle, revolting.

If you want steak, have it done properly. Some of the best steaks I've had have been in the States. Just don't have it in a bun covered with 'cheese'.

We didn't spend long in Philadelphia, a few hours before our flight. We visited the Liberty Bell but I was somewhat underwhelmed by it, maybe because I didn't feel any particular resonance with it. The centre was nice and historic however drive a few blocks down and it's a different world. Very run down and ghetto like. I've never seen so many weeds growing through public pavements, do the local authority not look after deprived neighbourhoods?

I couldn't tell you what the nightlife was like or restaurants but there was a nice atmosphere about the place. I checked out a few menus outside some of the restaurants as I'm a food obsessive and several seemed quite nice.

Would I choose to spend more time there? Probably not but that's mainly because there are so many other places that I want to visit instead.

Our city has so many BYOB restaurants! This is such a great option for dining - buy a good bottle of wine and enjoy a very reasonably priced restaurant: Marigolds, Nan, Branzino - to name a few.

what else are you interested in doing? Franklin Institute is such a fun museum.

Wander the historic areas. enjoy South Street. The weather is so nice this week!

February?

My nat'l professional organization has scheduled its annual conference this Feb. in Philadelphia, which is a city on DH's bucket list!

I know the last 2 winters have resulted in snowstorm shutdowns on the East Coast so am debating whether to attend and earn needed MCEs + cross out one more item on the list or get the MCEs thru our state organization and visit the city of Brotherly Love in better weather.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

Summer is PACKED with tourists. February will be a great time to see the historical sites - upfront and able to ask your questions, see things, and take photos. Might there be snow? Sure, but Ohio has snow during the winter, too.

You will enjoy the great food, have a free hotel, and earn brownie points.

Check out shows that might be playing at the Walnut Street Theater -- our version of Broadway (and it is historical buidling too). And the Academy of Music --- another outstanding theater/hall. The Kimmel Center is the zitzy new place. All within 2 or so blocks of each other.

And get tickets to the Flyers ... Just ride the Broad Street subway SOUTH to the end of the line ...

Just got back from trip. Thank You for info. We had a great time. I would recommend the Italian market walking tour. Also see Jersey Boys is playing at Forrest. Might have to plan another trip.
