Wanting to make a contribution where it counts the most to help a shelter. There are Animal Rescue Leagues, the Humane Society and MSPCA in MA. No one I ask seems to know what the difference is between them. Do you?

I know there are many groups out there who will suffer in this economy.

Someone at work suggested giving to a no kill shelter. There is Bestfriends but it is in the West coast and there are the pets who assist the disabled.

Welcome input!

We have always been huge supporters of pet-related charities (do you think my TUG name is a giveaway?:) ). But for the past four years, we have actively sought out no-kill shelters to give our money to. Since I live in Canada, I cannot speak specifically of the three charities you mentioned; however I know that here the SPCA does euthanize unwanted animals. For that reason, four years ago we started directing our substantial donations to several local no-kill facilities. We made this decision after much thought ... others will no doubt have other opinions.

Our Bandit is a mutt from the MSPCA Metro South office in Brockton. Growing up, my Dad was in charge of our many dogs and cats and he swore by the MSPCA Angell Memorial Hospital. So that's what I'd choose, the MSPCA.

This is a nice thing you're doing. :)

It's great to help the animals

I contribute to a number of organizations who help animals. Most of them are caring organizations that do a lot of good. I think the most effective one in terms of making real change happen is the Humane Society of the United States.

I don't agree with their position on everything, but they are an extremely dedicated and effective organization that is making a huge difference in many ways all across the country. If you want to help animals as a group, I think this is probably the best one to contribute to.

On the other hand, if you want to help invididual animals...or groups that help individual animals...then I think supporting a "no kill" organization is a great way to go. I think the best one in the country is right here in Utah...Best Friends.

www.bestfriends.org

The work they are doing is just tremendous. While they are based here in the Mountain West, they help animals all over the country...including many of the rescued Michael Vick dogs, hurricane Katrina victims, and much more.

If you want to contribute to a no kill shelter in the eastern part of the country, the Briggs Animal Adoption Center is affliliated with the National Humane Education Society. I think they are a good group and have supported them as well.

Hopefully this helps. If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. (I'm sure there are some good local groups in Massachusetts, but I'm not familiar with any in your area.)
