(CNN)"A moonless evening could give stargazers a fantastic light show next week.

The annual Perseid meteor shower, which is known for being among the brightest of meteor showers, is happening near the tail end of summer.

The major meteor shower will be visible in the Northern Hemisphere.

"If you see one meteor shower this year, make it August's Perseids or December's Geminids," NASA says. "The Perseids feature fast and bright meteors that frequently leave trains, and in 2015 there will be no moonlight to upstage the shower."..."

Hoping for clear skies...... And insomnia!

I sat out last night for about 30 minutes (10p PT) and saw 4 really brilliant meteors ... and then went to bed satisfied. It was interesting how different each was ... although each was bright, glittery and "slow" (you could really watch them rather than 'barely catch a glimpse"). The first one appeared blue/green with a long tail, the second shimmery gold ... the last red with gold after glow.

I love sitting in a dark sky during the various meteor showers!

Saw 5 in 5 minutes. They were of varying brightness and duration.

Will return in another hour.

Supposed to peak around 3 am. I have the coffee pot pre-set.

My neighbors are joining us in the driveway.

Nice night. Clear, warm and no skeeters.

I meant to go outside to see them and them I totally forgot. Have a really bad head cold and went right to bed.

I did wake up at 1am (CST) and looked for all the "action". I believe I was supposed to look towards the North East. After five minutes of seeing nothing, I went back to bed. Surely I did something wrong.

Went outside for a bit when I woke up around 1 a.m. (Eastern time) and saw four or five impressive "flares" in about 20 minutes, toward the east, before returning to bed.
Peak was supposed to be around 3 a.m., but all I saw at that time was the inner surface of my closed eyelids. :zzz:

Woke up. Took the dog out. Looked up for a while. Might have seen one in my peripheral vision. Went back to bed.

I decided I wouldn't make a good astronomer. It all happens after my bed time and has a lousy sound track.

clear skies, perfect temps.

The skies were literally lighting up similar to the effect when fireworks go off beyond the horizon.

I've seen quite a few good ones in my day, but I saw one meteor today--with a tail of extended 'sparks' behind it--that beat anything I've ever seen. Ever.

They were coming from two directions as well...big ones from east to west, smaller ones north-south.

Very spectacular.
Worth setting the alarm for.

This is exactly the experience I had years ago. It was magical as the shooting stars were everywhere and seemed lower to the earth than I had ever seen before. "The night of shooting stars".

I am hopeful that this will happen once again.

Next year, I am going to reserve a week at my own cottage on the Cape during the Perseid week. Hardly any ambient light and hoping for a clear night.

I was down there once when the Harvest Moon came up and over the Nantucket Sound. It was incredible.

Good luck on getting the clear night. In August, I would think your chances would be good.

I saw the experience once during my teen years. I couldn't tell you what I was doing out that late. I had no idea what was going on at the time, I just lucked into it that evening. Several years later I learned about the Perseid meteors and realized that what it was. It was pretty cool to see. I have never seen it since that time.

I had a happy / sad, reflective memory and moment while watching the Perseids last night which I'll take the liberty of sharing here...

When I was a boy, my younger brother and I saved up to buy a small aluminum Elgin skiff (...that's a boat, for you landlubbers) from the Sears catalog.
We saved and saved (paper route money, allowance, bottle returns, etc.) but realistically, we were never likely going to quite get there on our own.

My late Dad, may God rest and bless his soul, somehow made that boat appear in the front yard one Christmas Day. To this day, more than a half-century later but envisioned like it was just yesterday, I remember my brother and I rowing out on the water one summer night, just lying back looking at the stars above. We didn't even know about (let alone expect) meteor showers, but we were treated to a spectacular display (Leonids? Perseids? --- I dunno ) and we were just in complete awe.

My Dad passed just three years ago. I noticed a tear or two involuntarily running down my cheek last night as I looked up and watched the Perseids display above.

We saw a few dozen meteors last night. The wind shifted and the smoke from a wildfire near Mt Adams began to obscure the sky. About 1 am our dog went nuts because of a coyote or raccoon. Shortly after that we headed in.
