I didn’t read the article, but people stand in line in Florida to get a number to wait three more hours to be called up to get an id or drivers license or get new plates

Much simpler to get Passport Card wh3n you renew Passport. But Then many people do not have Passports.

We have appts. in early March, but plan to show up with our paperwork late some day since many people on Nextdoor mentioned being in and out in less than an hour by going late in the day.

DH went on day after Xmas. Was out in one hour. Previously tried to schedule an appt but slots were 3 months out.

Don't bad-mouth the entire state, my fine feathered friend.
You can also go to a rural county and get instant service; and
in many places, you can make appointments and jump the line.
I had appointment, but decided that March would be less hectic.

when we moved here, we went to Alva, waited two plus hours, this is in 2003, and were turned down because transferring from Illinois needed a birth certificate. Went back two days later, waited over three hours. Alva is pretty rural. It was quite an experience. Lots of people who didn't speak English so the clerk would speak English LOUDER so they could understand.

Yeah, not going to get Real ID until the last possible day. Rather just have passport card and ID.

Gee, it's not like there hasn't been plenty of advanced warning on this subject - people waiting to the last minute really do not deserve any sympathy.

My driver's license expires this year so I will need to either get another "non real id" one or go for the real id. I've been told that as a senior I can have it taken care of at the main office for the MVD, which requires no appointment and is generally not busy. I'm hoping this is true.

I believe a large part of the problem is all the delays by the States. They have known since 2002 or 2003 this was required. Unfortunately the Federal Government kept granting the States extensions. There either should have been no extensions or at the most one. The States got too lazy - assuming there would always be another extension.

FWIW: In Arkansas, we have to show documents in five different areas for the new enhanced DL's. The cost to renew remained the same ($40) but the new DL's cover an eight year period instead of 4. As noted in the article below, not all of our DFA offices can issue the Real ID compliant license (which seems strange) but I didn't find the process to be difficult at all.

And then there's Californians like me. If the airlines don't want to accept my passport, no problem. I just won't fly anywhere. I'm already in the best place in the world.

Mine expires on my birthday in April. I went on the California DMV website and filled out the forms. I was then notified that no appointments are available at any nearby office! For months! I was instructed to wait in line. I may just get a regular license because I have Global Entry and can use that card.

Anyone who lives in California knows the DMV might be one of the worst run government agencies on Earth.

I've never run into a well run government agency, lol. My license renews in October and haven't really worried about it since I have a passport and GE, but I still need to renew it at some point so your post prompted me to set up an appointment. I am booked for an appointment in late March in El Cajon. San Diego (Normal Ave), El Cajon, and Chula Vista had appointments in late March if you want to drive (PITA, I know). Poway had no appointments. I would rather spend time driving in my car to another location than walking up for an appointment at the DMV. That is just painful.

If you were too proactive in CA, say before April or so of 2019, the idjits STILL didn't have the proper document requirements. The early birds had to go back or submit one more piece of paper by mail. My solution would be to just use our passports for a year or so, but Cliff wanted the DLs taken care of, hence the March appts we'll keep unless we try the 4pm trick.

I hear ya! I looked at San Marcos, Oceanside, Poway and Temecula. Nothing at any of them. I guess I could make an appointment in El Cajon or Chula and take my motorcycle and make it a day trip!

A friend of my mother's used to go out someplace near Palm Springs when he had to renew his license. At that time he was in his later 80's or early 90's and said it was much easier to get the renewals there.

There's a county 20 miles North with no interstate, movie theatre or hotel
(true!), and at the DL office/tag agency, they wait for customers to show up.

For those especially in California, if you can find a DMV that only handles drivers licenses, those might move faster. I went to the one in Stanton before it closed and it wasn’t as crowded. But I don’t know of any others like that in CA.

Got mine 2 years ago when I changed my last name. Then had to return to the DMV in November 11 months later to renew my license. Going to the DMV twice in one year:wall:

Same here in October for both my wife and I in Washington. I thought it was going to be a problem but no lines.

If you're standing in line at the California DMV it's because you didn't make an appointment. I got my Real ID in December and from the time my appointment was scheduled to the time I left the DMV office was about twenty minutes. I was there a little longer than that only because I arrived early. That pretty much mirrors my previous experience with DMV appointments. While I can't say they were the friendliest bunch they at least processed my paper work efficiently. The strangest part of the process was the guy processing my application was adamant that I was wasting my time (and I presume his) getting the Real ID and should really be using my passport for all of my domestic flights.

In December when I requested an appointment at the Ventura DMV office using the on line system I was scheduled for March. While that would have been tolerable I'd just filled all of the paperwork out on line and didn't want to hold it for that long. What you can do is immediately go back on line and ask for a another appointment. You can do this as often as your fingers will hold out. I checked three times in about a ten minute span and found a same day appointment. While I think that was unusually good luck, I'm guessing if you are persistent in checking for appointments, cancellations will occur and you'll be able to move your appointment forward.
