Grand daughter will graduate from Tidewater Tech this coming March. She has never applied for a Pel grant.

Any help would be appreciated. Where to find an online form and where to send it?

Is it too late?

Can she apply each year?

I see many web sites that want money so they can save her money. :whoopie:

My friend, Google, found this site: Pell Grant info. It may be a little late to apply now. Have her talk to her admissions office.

Here you go: http://www.ed.gov/programs/fpg/index.html

Here is the FAFSA website - this is the application upon which the Pell Grant is based.

Does your granddaughter have a financial need? Because unless she is 24 or married, I believe she has to qualify under her parents income. (At least that was the case with our 20 and 24 year olds.)

(It looks like the Fed application date was June 30th, and the CA application date was March 2 - but she should check with financial aid at her college.)

The 2008-2009 School Year (July 1st, 2008 - June 30th, 2009):

* FAFSA on the Web applications must be submitted by midnight Central Daylight time, June 30, 2009.
* Corrections on the Web forms must be submitted by midnight Central Daylight time, September 15, 2009.
* Note: Your school must have your complete and correct information by your last day of enrollment in the 2008-2009 school year.

If she is applying for a post-graduate grant for 2009-2010, she should start working on it after the first of the year - the CA application is usually due around March 1st.

I had gotten a Pell Grant when I went back to school nights. It's not too late to apply. I applied in late Feb., and was in school for the fall semester, (my kids thought I was nuts for wanting to go to school - they were like Jr. High at the time), I think it was like mid-summer when I was notified. And yes, you can apply every year, and if Family circumstances change, re-apply. Check out wackymother's website, when I went, it was BC, (Before Computers), I just went to the office of Continuing Ed. Good Luck!! :cheer:

Amber's parents are of no consquence when it comes to assistance.
she is pretty much on her own in an unknown world.
We help where we can and probably too much for Amber's self confidence.

Thanks for the information.
She supposedly has consulted with school administation but I know she doesn't comprehend. Once out of their sight, she is lost.

I'll try to guide her from these sights you have given me.

Thanks,
Robert

Robert - if Amber is under 24 and unmarried, the application process requires her to use very specific tax info. from her parent's tax return. Unfortunately, they process doesn't take into account whether the family is willing to help, they just determine an amount that the family should be able to provide, based on their income. If her parents are very low income, or receive assistance, she may still qualify on their income.

I think she will need to consult with her financial aid office. If you live close by, maybe you could offer to go with her to a financial aid appointment? I have helped a lot of my students fill out the FAFSA - it's not too bad, once you get all the financial info. together. However, it is too late for this year - but if she is going to graduate school - maybe next year?

First, we need some more info. Is Tidewater Tech. a two year school? Is she going to continue at another college? Are you sure she doesn't "comprehend"? :)

It's a two. She is 21.

Father disowned her years ago when marriage broke up. Mother won't keep a job and lives with older sisters. Neither can support her, nor wants to.

Much of her income (we feel) goes to her mother.

Amber was a ward of the court, with us. She has a room in the house we occupy, but rarely sticks around unless she has nowhere to go.

From reading the info you all furnished, it appears 2008 is a wash. I'll push for Amber to apply for 2008-2009 year.

Does she comprehend???? Everything is way over her head and she won't apply herself to find out how to do for herself. She sidesteps any questions. Hard to pin her down about what she knows or has done. Usually find she didn’t do and doesn’t want me to know.

Never received any kind words as a child so feels she is worthless. Cannot take ANY criticism.

Medical Assistant is as close as I've been able to find an interest, from Amber.
She loves fashion design, but how does she pursue that without asserting herself.

She is a beautiful young lady, longing for acceptance. Hopefully she will find acceptance in medical facilities so she finds independence and self worth.

If Amber was a ward of the court, under your supervision, that could be her (and your) saving grace in this matter. Fill out the FASFA with her, don't include any income info for her parents or for you. Take it in to the Financial Aid office of the College or University which she wishes to attend, with her at your side. Explain the situation to the TOP DOG in the Financial Aid office. Don't talk to anybody other than the TOP DOG! Bring with you any papers that relate to her being a ward of the court and also anything that states that the court released her into your custodianship. This actually is a situation where she can get a whole bunch of money from the government, most likely. If i can help you furter, feel free to PM me. I'm not in the Financial Aid business, but I too had to fight to get money from the government when my rich father refused to pay for any higher education. That was in the late 90's and I was a bit older, but I learned a whole lot.

Good Luck!

I agree with John, but on the application you have to show some income from somewhere, because you have to show how she is currently supporting herself. So if she receives assistance, or has a job, or an allowance from you, or whatever, that should be listed under HER income. I have been told by our local Community College Financial Aid Office that a student has to show an income of at least $6K a year to qualify as an independent - that may be different where you live.

As an alternative, since her mom has no income or is on assistance - listing Mom's income might be the way to go. Either way, I think Amber will get some financial aid, if she gets some help and advice from Financial Aid in your state.
