I was in high school when I first heard of Arlo Guthrie, not long after the album was released. The Viet Nam War and the Draft were looming large in my future. I remember buying the album, sitting on the floor and listening to all 18 minutes of it, and wanting more. My appreciation for creative songwriters and storytellers has never left me. The next year I "discovered" a very young James Taylor whose piano player at his concert was an unknown named Carole King. The next year her Tapestry album hit the charts, and things went nuts for a long time.

Thanks for the head's up about this concert. I've set the DVR. :)

We've been to a couple of his concerts here in the Twin Cities. His stories are as much fun as his music. I hope the concert includes some of those too. I used to bug my daughter by finding new ways each year to play Alice's Restaurant on Thanksgiving. Left a voice mail, sent an email, snunk a CD into her car, etc. She tried to get even one year by teaching it to her kids and had them call me and sang it. It back fired on her because then they were singing about Alice's Restaurant all day long. :D

"What's ya in for kid?" "Littering."

A local radio station would always play Alice's Restaurant repeatedly on the hour on Thanksgiving. I'd leave it on as we drove to Mom's house for dinner and drive my kids nuts.

Cheers

His winter home in Florida is close to my home, haven't run into him yet though.

I loved his updated version where he talks about attending Carter's inauguration party.

I met Arlo Guthrie at Epcot he gave me his autograph and he sang the Alice's resturant story. I told him I remembered when the movie came out. He looked at me for a moment and said "wow how old are you?" Very nice man.

If you missed it, check your PBS station. I found another showing that I have set to DVR. I think I first heard the song in college in the 70s.

I just watched it, and enjoyed the stroll down memory lane. What a great entertainer he is. I think if anything, he's better than he used to be.

We were talking about it, and it makes sense - he's every bit the entertainer and clever songwriter his father was. Add to that everything he's experienced in the years he's lived, where we've had even more social craziness than his father experienced.

Great show. Thanks again for the head's up!

Just finished watching it myself. Besides the great stories and funny songs, some of the songs near the end were quite touching. Very nice!

We missed it cause I was in Crazy Drive with all the Thanksgiving fixins' and people all around. Also noticed when I checked the PBS website that it's running again next weekend, so we'll tape that one.

Thanks for your post--sent the link to my siblings and at least one of them was able to watch it and loved it.
