The US Post Office does the same thing. Let's say I mail a pkg. to someone and insure it, and they claim that it was damaged in the mail. To get the insurance, they have to relinquish the item to the post office. It cannot go back to the sender.

I once sold an item on ebay and this happened. I do not believe that the item was damaged, because it was very carefully packaged - I think the person thought they would get to keep it and the insurance.

I would not use USPS as a measuring stick.

When I shipped a computer I sold it arrived broken. Thankfully I had insurance. The buyer sent it back to be without insurance. I then had to take it to the post office and the manager did not want to pay out the insurance. Saying there was no way to tell when USPS damaged the computer.

In your case, the buyer was in the wrong - you cannot claim the insurance under those circumstances - the buyer did not follow the proper procedure. The scenario that you presented could have been a scam to collect insurance money on worthless computers.

Right the buyer should have taken the computer back to his post office and filed the claim. He just wanted a quick refund from me and must have figured mailing it back was the best quickest and easiest way.

I shipped the computer in the original packaging from dell. I only used it myself for a few months.
